    Raymarine gps\sounder combo

Hi all, I'm thinking of purchasing the Raymarine a68 or a78 to run with my existing garmin 551s (not happy with the sounder part)
Does anyone know if there any good.

hey mate. good value. however build quality is just 1 star had a fair few issues with customers units "and two of my display issues" here is the current issue
its a shame, on paper i really like them. i like the chirp. i like t he wifi and i like how cheap it is. but i would be looking at a garmin 751 or 557 with a tm150 chrip transducer IMO

I am in the same boat. The 551s is a good gps plotter but sucks as a sounder. I have been looking at humminbird 898 and lowrance hd7. Liking the humminbird as it comes with transducer in the price lowrance gets confusing because you have to buy transducer separately. I will follow this post eagerly.

For similar money as the a68 you can get the furuno 627 with transducer.

or the Raymarine Dragonfly if you really want chirp for less.

id say def work out what your budget is. if your budget is around that $1600 a7X series money you have a few healthy options to choose from.
if your just wanting to improve on that garmin and not to phased by chirp or downvission etc. then id be looking at the echomap 70s . faaaarr easily the most solid 7" touch screen on the market. sans a few bells and whistles compared. but its hard to put a price on something that wont break for a long time.

yes the furunos make a decent sounder. "albeit way overpriced" and the raymarine is a very cheap package. but i think the KISS principle is worth while
here are some videos i made showing some features of a bunch of units

    Re: Raymarine gps\sounder combo

If your worried about reliability issues, then type these words into google "remanfactured refurbished marine electronics".
The same 2-3 brands(one in particular is on every site) come up on heaps of US sites. I imagine these are the units sent back with problems.

    Re: Raymarine gps\sounder combo

well the 898si good unit that. 7" side/down imaging. broadband sonar gps combo
the garmin equivelent would be the 751xs with the side/down vu module
and lowrance would be the hds7T with an LSS2 transducer and HSTWSBL transducer

the 898 "when you chuck in a map card" would still be the cheaper of all. but it is getting old "and its being surpased in a few months with the humminbird ION AND ONIX models" but not to shabby
the 751 is current gen tech and is a very good peice of kit with its chirp and evnt, side/down vu
the hds7 is between gen tech upgraded from the gen2 HDS range. and its not to shabby either.

    Re: Raymarine gps\sounder combo

Do you think there will be run out prices on the humminbird range? Even though it might be "old" technology, I am still tempted to get the 898 as it seems to be mature (ie not many bugs) Bit wary of Garmin after the 551s. Garmin seem to be very good gps but is their sounder function better in the 751xs? My etec has a nmeas connection to the 551s so that I see my engine function (fuel flow, use motor stats etc). Do you know if this would plug into the 751xs

    Re: Raymarine gps\sounder combo

there will (kinda already is) a run out special price on the 500/700 series "being replaced by the 600 series in feb" nothing from humminbird on any other model. i have a few 800 series and 1100 series going cheap "jsut to make room" as well as allllllll my display models "sigh. expensive year this is going to be"

the MAJOR upgrade for t he garmin range this time around is its sonar. the sonar on the previous gen. the 551/451/556/750s were all pretty bad. that sonar tech was pushing 6 years old. the current gen "other than offering chirp on its larger 557 and 751 models" is a HUUUGEEE step forward. with its HDID 77/200khz sonar. crazy different. i dont have any older models on display anymore to take a compairson photo. but have a look at some of my videos showing the comparison between chirp and HDID.

the 557/751 are both NMEA2K compatable.

an 898cx si with navionics gold xl9 card is about $1950 . so similar money to the garmin 751

Thanks CM, that is an awesome amount of information. Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions. Selling my cannondale road bike at the moment so I will give a pm when I get the cash. Wife has stopped me buying stuff until I get rid of some of my unused toys.
