    navionics and SD cards

A quick question, I have a card reader, a formatted SD card, how do I get my hand written waypionts firstly onto SD card then onto the Northstar m84 via SLOT2 (slot 1 occupied by navtronics). I am afraid I am completely stumped.

    Cheers

    Hi,
You could try the following. (do just 1 mark to test). Download GPSA at http://www.gpsu.co.uk/. GPS conversion is sometimes tricky so may not work
    1. Insert your card into the Navman and go into user card window and format card. Carefull not to format your marks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.
    2. Save your marks to this card or if you have no marks create one and save. Also move your cursor on your gps (make sure your gps has fixed first) to a spot easily identified such as dock, marker etc. Write the latitude longatude of this location down on paper ...do not save this it on your gps as this is important to verify location is correct later.
    3. confirm your marks you have written down are wgs84 datum. (most are).
4.your marks should look like this (that you have written down)16 41.1729 S 146 00.1742 E. the last 4 can also have 3 digits. if it has the decimals like this then your marks are currently in notation of degrees decimal minutes which is good.
4a. put your card into sd sreader on your computer and save file to 2 places. 1 to be kept secure incase all screws up and you want to copy original file back to your gps plotter and the second to play with. Save this one your muckin with to your desktop.
5.In GPSU click file then open the file you saved to your desktop. If you cant see the file, Next to file name is a box select :all file types". OPen your saved mark.
    6. double click the empty box under ID
    7. input the mark you wrote down in step 2. enter lat long and name it "z" . (you can change the mark type, comment etc later).
    8. then save to desktop to same name as original desktop file. ( should be saving as xml file from memory).
9 then save this to the sd card and "replace" existing file.
10 put it in your navman and load marks. Your navman may say do you want to copy duplicate files select no. (you dont want to copy the same mark twice)
11 Now to confirm all went well please confirm your mark you wrote on paper of a dock marker etc is in correct position
12 If this worked do same process to enter all your hand written marks.
If you have less than 50 it may be less time to set up a small 12v supply and the gps on your lounge and enter manually. Power leads can be cheap to make yourself. Most marine electronic repair shops should sell conx connectors .
Theres alot of variables involved (program is complex)and it can be tricky for first time users, however marine techs/enthusiasts can convert marks from one type of GPS to another but not to manually enter marks. If you want it completed they will need it in typed format like below
20 13.114S 148 49.133 and name. Usually costs a couple of hundred depending.
GPSU is a powerfull tool and in conjuction with other hardware/software can convert units from Navionics, cmap, maxsea, garmin, tmq cplot, furuno, raymarine etc to anything.

    Good luck
PS if it work you can then save to google earth in GPSU and convert backwards and forwards. I use it for finding isolated bombies for spearing and for planning, deleting old marks and sharing marks easily with others.

    Hi Wayno

I'd say each Navionics map program is designed to be used in different devices ie: your windows or mac computer, the same goes for the maps pre-installed on an SD card by Navionics or C-Map for instance. They would be designed to be used in GPS or Combo units like your Humminbird, Lowrance etc but cannot be used on a windows or mac computer.

About 500 bucks Wayno.. Ive got the navionics app on my iphone and have saved about 1000 buying a dedicated gps and nav sd card..Its bang on the money and im offshore up to 20ks east, i also use the track feature a fair bit to see how the drift is going to go, then line that up to go over a spot i like..
Its a huge drain on the phone though so you have to have a 12volt ciggy style charger (same one as in the car) plugged in constantly which isn't a big deal.
