Garmin 750s Trip Computer giving inaccurate information.
Went out yesterday and reset my trip computer before leaving. I got to Hutchies and it was saying that i had travelled 45NM which is way out for a trip from Mooloolaba (one way) . I first thought that i must not have cancelled it off properly from the day before, doing 37NM on the Saturday, however those sums just didn't add up, so i reset the trip computer out on the water and it was jumping all over the place climbing to over 100NM in less than a minute.
I checked for sat's and had excellent coverage, so wondering if this has happened to anyone else?

There is an odometer and a trip meter, perhaps you reset one but was reading the other? I have done that before....as for the numbers jumping around the place that sounds odd, I find mine accurate and stable.

Thanks Crunchy, but i made sure the odometer was reset back to zero. I've lost faith in the trip data now as it can't be accurately relied upon. Checked the unit today and it's not doing it now, however that is of no relief as it could happen again any time i suppose ?

Re: Garmin 750s Trip Computer giving inaccurate information.
Do a reboot on the unit. Probably a software glitch and doing a reboot or similar will probably fix it. Go to Garmin website to find the peocedure to reboot your unit, or call their customer service hotline and they sill tell you.
Note to self: Don't argue with an idiot. They will only bring you down to their level and beat you with experience....

Re: Garmin 750s Trip Computer giving inaccurate information.
Called customer service ML and ended up in the bloody Phillipine's and they said to update the software. I updated the software just after purchase to 4.10 and i'm not sure on a reboot as it's not doing it now and don't want to loose my marks. I won't get into what a bloody chore it was talking to this bloke for no usefull help.

Re: Garmin 750s Trip Computer giving inaccurate information.
Get yourself an SD card and do a backup. I have the same unit and each time I add marks etc I back them up to my backup SD card as well as on the homeport software for the PC.
Then do your backup and no probs if you lose your marks as piece of cake backing them back up to your unit again.

Good advice Volvo.
here is the link to Garmin's page where it tells you how to do a software reset/reboot and how to backup your data first:

Re: Garmin 750s Trip Computer giving inaccurate information.
Thanks ML/Volvo I'll give it a go, it's just that it's working at the moment properly without the reboot so how would i know if it actually did something? Regardless i'll give it a go. Have video of it doing it, but can't upload. Thanks for your help everyone.

Re: Garmin 750s Trip Computer giving inaccurate information.
Fishing, i am not overly familiar with the Garmins.
I use Lowrance gear. I know that with the Lowrances, it is very important to shut them down properly because they are like mini-computers, if they don't shut down properly the software doesn't close itself off properly and then you get all sorts of weird problems happening. Such as the kind of thing you describe with the trip distances.
So for the Lowrance units, you shouldn't turn the battery off while unit is on, and should not turn then off just by holding the power button down. On the lowrances, the proper way to turn off is to hit the power button, the menu pops up, select turn off, highlight, and hit enter. Done.
If there is a proper way to shut down the Garmin, you should do it that way as well as it will help avoid problems with the units software.
And in any case, doing a software reboot every now and then isnt a bad thing to do, regardless. Just back up settings and data first so you dont lose anything and can restore them all after the reboot.
The other thing i have learnt after many years using these gadgets is to check your power supply to them. These marine electronics like a good, clean 12v power supply, and if you have corrosion on any joins, in wires, at the battery terminals, in switches or fuses, or poorly charged batteries, they can play up as well. Loose joins are bad too. So check all of that as well and clean and replace any even marginally questionable joins. Again, it cant hurt to do these things, can it!
cheers

KC i'm on the Sunny Coast so if it's just a reboot i should be fine with that, but thanks for the offer. Have you heard of this happening before? The unit has been great apart from this issue, and the vision chip i bought for it.

Re: Garmin 750s Trip Computer giving inaccurate information.
Fishing, don ft know if you have the owners manual for the set( full manual) if not its an easy download on thegarmin website.
Page 52 & pages 53 tells you how to copy your data to an SD card andhow toback it up to your PC and back to your unit.
Like I said previousely, have done it se eral timeswithout a hassle so have a read of your manual prior to doing it ey.
I also keep a hard copy of all my waypoints in a folder just incase sometime you do t have a chance to do a backup and your unitmay kark itself.
My old Eagle unit which even though it wasnt a plotter with map just gps was spot on always taking me back to my spots and it happened to kark it suddenly and luckilly I had all my waypoints saved.
So it pays.
Previouse advice given re clean contacts terminals etc is good advice and so is topped up batteries in good nik for all electrics.

Re: Garmin 750s Trip Computer giving inaccurate information.
Thanks Volvo, and yeah i'll back-up my data before hand. I've done a software upgrade before so no problems there, just hope i don't have to do reboots all the time on a reasonably new unit. Batteries are old but still in good nick with clean terminals, and don't have any electrical issues apart from the Raymarine being sensitive on start-up. Everything else on the unit was working apart from the trip data, which seems a little odd to me, but i'm no whiz kid on this sort of stuff.

Re: Garmin 750s Trip Computer giving inaccurate information.
111, I have two of these units and they work fine, the connection as mentioned is still probably the culprit, even something as simple as the one at the back of the unit may not have had the lock ring turned to secure it properly. I have rebooted one of mine and it is no big deal as I had all the back up but I did need to go in and reset my preferences (Wayne, any hints on how to save these would be appreciate). If you need a hand to have a look at your unit I am at Caloundra, send me a PM if needed. I don't think there has been a software update for quite a while, mine is saying V3.60 (once again Wayne, is this the latest).
PS: I have seen a unit on a boat where the locking ring was omitted, the owner didn't think it was necessary, but it is vital.

Re: Garmin 750s Trip Computer giving inaccurate information.
Thanks Dignity for the offer of help but should be ok. Checked all connections at the back of the unit again to be sure and all sound. The unit was working fine in all other aspects apart from the trip data, so i'm not sure what the issue was and have sent the video to Garmin for them to look at. They are a great unit and i'm really happy with mine apart from this issue. I have added the software upgrades below though most are to do with AIS.
