    When the Secret is out

Being self employed now comes with some perks. I have been flat out working but didn't have anything booked for today. Coincidentally today was the best before more crap weather sets in, so the boss ( me) pulled a sickie and went out around Peel, Dunwich, Maclay. It was tough work fighting the N/NE wind drifting plastics, wind against tide reduced the odds a little, so this diehard Tupperware convert had to pull something out of the bag or go home with a big doughnut. Last trip I persevered and scored a 58cm on a squidgy, but I didn't feel like drifting around in crappy northerly conditions this time, electing to anchor up somewhere out of the wind, have lunch, break open the thermos of coffee and watch the world go by.. What is it about fishing that brings out the tiger in my appetite? Last time I prepared 3 rounds of sangas + the packet of chips, but when I got home I could have eaten the crutch out of a low flying duck! This time I bought a loaf of bread from the hot bread lady, threw the entire loaf in the cabin, stuffed the butter knife and Vegemite ( my staple diet when fishing) gallons of staminade drink, coffee, chips into the soft Esky.

Lightly weighted big prawns got me a feed, snapper @ 40, 43 and 45cm and one bream at 33cm. To the title of my post. I could not understand why one of my favorite little honey holes was peppered with at least half a dozen boats, and mid week? What da?. So many in fact I chose not to fish there, too crowded for my liking. I understand that someone caught a stonker snap there a few days ago, and decided he wanted to gloat to all his mates, using whatever means including social media. Must have been very specific about the technique and location, because I have never seen this spot so busy, even on weekends! I think it basically shuts a place down if you are expecting to catch trophie snapper there any time soon after it's been pummeled by hoards there today. But I am just as guilty in the past, you know the conversations that start with " Just between you and me, I will tell you where I caught it, but please keep it quiet" But you have that sort of conversation with one or two too many and bam, the secret is out!

I guess what I am practicing more and more is - do the research and have several spots that you can visit to see if any fish are chewing there. I have been going back to the same producers too often. Used to be Wellington Point, then I would only go to Mud Island every trip I did in the bay. Then it was peel, south west rocks and the houseboat. If someone caught a decent fish in any of these areas and I knew it was public knowledge, I will avoid that spot because I know the hoards will be there giving it a hiding!

It was a great day to be out, avoiding the crowds! The photo shows a full tray which is the only tray small enough to fit in the fridge while big enough to sit them in - till tomorrow when they go to a couple of mates!

Well done mate. I got out today off mooloolaba. Trolled and trolled for macs. Even hit the Cobia wrecks off Caloundra with livies on the drift for a couple of hours. Doughnut!

hahaha. had the same thing happen at mud this season. set up midweek one night at spot x and within the next couple of hours had another 3 boats pull up what I would call a little too close. when the sun came up I discovered all 3 were blokes I had blabbed to. I have since removed my tongue...

Re: When the Secret is out

The problem is that generally good fisherman rotate spots and give them a rest for a while.....soon as some people get onto a good thing they fish it every possible chance and dont give it a rest until the fish dry up....

I used to fish some of the areas in the northern bay long before they were common knowledge and the fishing was nothing less than sensational most of the time....

I was young and didnt understand the impact of telling a few 'Mates' and taking them there. needless to say these spots are now common knowledge....

The thing that hurts is the amount of time that went into finding these spots in the first place at the time there were very few people that knew of them and alot of the information was kept very quiet.... there was an enormess amount of time spent staring at the sounder and going around in circles...:-) wondering if the talk of secret wrecks loaded with snapper was just an urban Myth....

so now I'm spending time finding new ground to fish and im not telling a soul!!! :-)

Re: When the Secret is out

I used to think the NW cardinal marker at Mud could hold crowds of boats and still be able to find fish there regardless. I am not saying I am solely to blame, but I have been one of those catching big snapper there on plastics over the years and telling everyone about it. It might be my imagination but over the last couple of years the crowd has swelled much bigger than I ever remember from when I first started fishing it. So now we have two "carparks" at Mud. Ah well, you still need to know how to fish it, just ask Dave now, but he has had his tongue cut out

Re: When the Secret is out

I have no problem telling my mates the area I got fish on. There is a lot more to getting a few fish on board than plugging in a few GPS coordinates. When I find a bit of isolated structure I won't broadcast the position but see no issue in letting people know the general area.
I remember doing a trip off Moreton to fish a comp. I decided to "give up" my "top secret" Cobia mark. It ended up the spot was regularly fished by one of the other guys on board. His mark was about 20m south. The same fella gave me a mark off Straddy. It was 50m away from another of my "secret" marks.

I dont mind talking about general areas....

But when it comes to isolated structures (wrecks for example) its not the problem of people catching all the fish its just the constant pressure it gets....Anchors, Sounders and general noise..... the fish soon thin out.... its also about actually being able to fish it......a small isolated structure can't accomodate more than 1 boat in a lot of instances..... nothing worse than getting up early knowing everything is right to bag a fish off your favorite mark....collecting bait...then turning up there and there's 5 other clowns on your mark!

I will dig out some old photos of the fish we used to get off the Captain Nielson in the early days....this is before anyone knew about it....would never be another boat there and you could guarantee monster Snapper and Cobia....oh how things have changed.....
