Being self employed now comes with some perks. I have been flat out working but didn't have anything booked for today. Coincidentally today was the best before more crap weather sets in, so the boss ( me) pulled a sickie and went out around Peel, Dunwich, Maclay. It was tough work fighting the N/NE wind drifting plastics, wind against tide reduced the odds a little, so this diehard Tupperware convert had to pull something out of the bag or go home with a big doughnut. Last trip I persevered and scored a 58cm on a squidgy, but I didn't feel like drifting around in crappy northerly conditions this time, electing to anchor up somewhere out of the wind, have lunch, break open the thermos of coffee and watch the world go by.. What is it about fishing that brings out the tiger in my appetite? Last time I prepared 3 rounds of sangas + the packet of chips, but when I got home I could have eaten the crutch out of a low flying duck! This time I bought a loaf of bread from the hot bread lady, threw the entire loaf in the cabin, stuffed the butter knife and Vegemite ( my staple diet when fishing) gallons of staminade drink, coffee, chips into the soft Esky.
Lightly weighted big prawns got me a feed, snapper @ 40, 43 and 45cm and one bream at 33cm. To the title of my post. I could not understand why one of my favorite little honey holes was peppered with at least half a dozen boats, and mid week? What da?. So many in fact I chose not to fish there, too crowded for my liking. I understand that someone caught a stonker snap there a few days ago, and decided he wanted to gloat to all his mates, using whatever means including social media. Must have been very specific about the technique and location, because I have never seen this spot so busy, even on weekends! I think it basically shuts a place down if you are expecting to catch trophie snapper there any time soon after it's been pummeled by hoards there today. But I am just as guilty in the past, you know the conversations that start with " Just between you and me, I will tell you where I caught it, but please keep it quiet" But you have that sort of conversation with one or two too many and bam, the secret is out!
I guess what I am practicing more and more is - do the research and have several spots that you can visit to see if any fish are chewing there. I have been going back to the same producers too often. Used to be Wellington Point, then I would only go to Mud Island every trip I did in the bay. Then it was peel, south west rocks and the houseboat. If someone caught a decent fish in any of these areas and I knew it was public knowledge, I will avoid that spot because I know the hoards will be there giving it a hiding!
It was a great day to be out, avoiding the crowds! The photo shows a full tray which is the only tray small enough to fit in the fridge while big enough to sit them in - till tomorrow when they go to a couple of mates!
