    Peel, Mud or Harries?

    G'day guys

Going to hit the bay again this weekend with the old fella and was just wondering if any body has been having any luck? I moved up from Melbourne around 12 months ago and have hit the bay about 5 times to no real avail, have caught a few sub 30cm baby snaps at harries and loads of grinners? (long brown bastards with vicious teeth) Mainly fishing with bait. pilchards & Squid.

Have been trying to get a few on the soft plastics but with absolutely zero interest.
I might try and troll a few halcos hard bodies around. Has anybody been having any luck with these?

If you were to go out in the bay this saturday where would be your pick? What woudl you target and how would you do it? Just want to get onto something as I am quickly losing interest in spending 7-8 hours out on the bay without a decent touch.

    Cheers guys appreciate it.

Looking like it will be pretty ugly out there this weekend but if you see a chink in the weather set up in any of those places but away from everyone else and fish the change of tide / change of light for best chance.

I would not even bother going to mud, peel or harries due to the weather.
If you are desperate to go out for a fish, i would go the following places

    1. Brisbane River - crabs, snapper, threadies, bream, whiting , jew, trevally, shark , cod catfish
    2. Nerang river - whiting and grunter bream.

    or just watch robson green.

Never been up Brisbane River on my boat. How far up river do most anglers typically go? Do you cruise up from the bay? Anchor or drift? Outgoing or incoming tide? Sorry for all the questions but sounds like something I might want to try one day.

If you edit the above post and put a square bracket in front of the word 'quote' it will become a proper quote...

Put in at whytes island ramp and head north under the bridge. The world is you oyster from there. Rock wall on north side of river, head west to gateway and fish the bombies and ledges or turn right and head east fish the rock wall on the southern side at the mouth. Just be careful near the wharves they get a bit twitchy if you get to close.

most importantly, don't give in. all the places you mentioned produce fish. the hardest part of fishing is having the patience to persist when the going is slow. change your tactics when something isn't working. if you are an "anchor and wait" type fisho, use berley to bring the fish to you. if this isn't working, stow the anchor and drift instead or try trolling. and definitely do not give up on plastics. my best bay fish have been plastic caught and at all times of the day. my single best snapper came after drifting the same ground for 6 hours with only one throw back before it to show for my efforts. one big fish at the end of a long session is extremely satisfying to say the least. if you are after snapper you will greatly increase your chances if you fish between may and September.
fishing's as simple as 3 P's - patience, perserverance and PLASTIC!

Thanks guys. Sorry Nick for highjacking. I've probably anchored twice in the last 8 years as I've been doing mainly SPs and artificials. Just looked at Google Map on where Whyte Island is so I gather most of the boat fishing is done from the BP refinery out towards the river mouth. No wonder I don't see people casting SPs from boats down at Southbank. Lots to learn and places to explore.

Thanks for all your replies guys. Much appreciated. I really dont want to give up on the plastics as I can only imagine just how big of a thrill it will be when I do nail something. Do you guy employer the tactic of hanging a dead line out the back with a plastic on whilst drifting? I might whack a few baits out and a dead line plastic out too. Hopefully this weekend the weather is better. Thinking of hitting it at about 4am saturday.

My advice would be to have a number of different spots and understand how they will be protected in winds of a certain direction.. also what spots will likely produce diff species and target them specifically.. nothing worse than turning up to the ramp with a stiff wind in your face whn other spots are calm and fishable.. get familiar with the weather sites.. seabreeze, BOM willy weather etc etc..

Nooo! Don't do it!!! For the experienced or very observant plastics fishermen only. Wind against tide, prop spinning in the current, fish one dead stick + one or two extra rods at the same time and you will know why some call it the "two rod curse" Courtesy of T1 when he observed me trying to fish two lines! Concentrate on your plastics rod only if you want to get used to plastics fishing or you will miss so many bites ( while unraveling tangled lines, line around prop, jigheads caught on the bottom and the list goes on), it will be frustrating!

    REPORT IS AS FOLLOWS:

Well went down the ramp yesterday morning 4.30am trying to get the old 80's 40hp Yamaha to go. No steering. Seems to be seized. On the way back home copped a rock/something in the side of the windscreen and it cracked.

Decided I am not going to put anymore money into my old boat. 4.5m front steer stessl tinny.

I am looking for something to use in and around the bay, but also something I can take offshore trolling on the right days. I visited around 5 yards yesterday. Didn't really see anything that took my fancy (well in my budget anyways!!!) I am looking to spend no more than $20,000 and am hoping to get a year 2002+ 100hp plus motor on something 5.5-6.5m metres long. I think I have found something on line but its a 3 hour drive for me to have a look at it so wanted to get your advice if I may.

The specs of the boat are: 6.00 metre cuddy cab 1985 hull fully refurbished this year, dual axle trailer that has just had $2,500 spent on it getting it up to scratch and a 150hp 2002 Johnson that has done 400 hours. The motor has just been fully serviced and the boat comes with 3 months warranty from the dealer. The bloke told me its an offshore boat with a 21" dead rise. ( I know to never believe a salesman haha)

My question for you is will this boat be suitable for offshore etc? will if be a comfortable fishing boat in the bay? Does anyone have a similar set up that can comment? Just looking to pick your brain as I really want to make the right decision. If it looks like a goer I will drive it up and inspect it before delivery etc. Looking forward to your responses! Cheers Nick.
