Running in New 150HP Yamaha Four Stroke?

HI, I have purchased a boat out of the USA with 150HP yamaha 4 Stroke, Im yet to get the boat on the water due to work commitments, so I was just reading through my engine manual and noticed the running (breaking) in recommendations. seems pretty restrictive for the first couple of hours, gee I thought I could just get here in the water and run as you would any other day.

Does anyone have experience with this process? do you have to follow the manual exactly? are there any differences in the US model and AUS model engines with respect to recommended fuel etc?

    My Manual states the following.

    1) For first hour of operation run engine at varying speeds unto 2000 r/min or about half throttle.

    2) For 2nd hour of operation increase engine speed as much as necessary to put the boat on plane but avoid full throttle then back off the throttle to keep the boat at a planing speed.

3)Remaining 8 hours Run engine at any speed however avoid operating at full throttle for more than 5 mins.

    4) After first 10 hours operate engine normally.

Guess I could pull a few lures for the first couple of hours and try to hook my first fish on the new boat.

    Thanks in advanced

    Cheers

    Steve

Just do it as per recommendations and get the engine oil changed at 20hrs.

I followed the book when running in my F115 not long ago and that was exactly the same as your 150. After the first two hrs I was also told by a marine mechanic to give it short blasts of about 10-15 seconds at full throttle then back off to normal cruise rpm's. He said to do this every now and then.
The main thing is not to let it idle or sit on the same rpm's for long periods. Slowing down and speeding up to bed the rings in is the key. I varied the rpm's when cruising all the way up to 10 hrs just to be sure for my own piece of mind.
I use BP ultimate in all the boats I've had in fact I use it in every motor that I own(car, mower, whipper snipper, boat), that's just a personal choice I've made and it's now a habbit of mine. Your manual will tell you a minimum RON(octane level) which is probably 91 RON. 91 or higher will be fine.

Definately follow the manual for running in procedures.
Not doing so could result in the engine being an oil burner for the rest of its life, or major damage can be done to rings if wide open throttle is used too early in the engines life.
Also, as said above, oil change after the first 10-20 hours is vital.

If that's the case how do the dealers do a water/prop test without hitting WOT. I know mine was ran at WOT while testing just after installation. No way around it really unless they ask you to come back after 10 hrs to do a water test? I know a guy in Newcastle who used to sell mercurys,. My mate lived next door to them on a waterfront property. We would often watch as they launched a brand spanking new boat fiited with new engine and hammer it from the get go.

Alot of for and against the manufacturer's "proper" steady bed in procedure - http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm

    ??? - https://www.google.com.au/search?q=r...-GB%3Aofficial

One thing I've been told for all engines is avoid using synthetic oil during break in and change oil early.

In the old days, the principle was to run the engine at differing speeds for short periods, the idea being to run the rings in evenly....basically.

I still believe that even with the advanced technology that we have today, that following the manufacturers specs for doing this is not only still sensible, BUT, when time for the 1st oil change, all warranties/guarantees would still be in place.

These people are NOT stupid....either NOW, or somewhere down the track...UNLESS you "do as you are told"....warranties can be questioned and even become "null & void" if any other action is determined later on as having a diverse effect on both the Motor & its' warranties.

    jus a cupla cents worth...

    Cheers, Ray.

forgot to mention, when you take you engine in for its initial 20 hr service, they can print out a copy of your run-in times. You will be able to see how long you spent in each rev range. They can do this for the life of the engine. its handy to know when buying second hand. you can see who is continually at WOT or trolling etc.

Maybe that's why a lot of new boats don't come propped correctly, because maybe they don't do the Wot test like they say they did. If they do the Wot test you'd like to think they would at least do the first two hours of the run in procedure before they give it a blast to Wot. They probably don't but that would be the correct procedure according to the manufacturers recommendations.

On the other side of thinking maybe they try to drum up business down the track on the sly if they do some sort of damage by hitting Wot straight away. Not saying that is the case but you never know hey.

Thanks everyone for your input, I really appreciate it. I will be doing things by the book to make sure I have no issues, and get the oil changed after the first 10 hr.

    Cheers

Well, managed to get out yesterday and completed 4.5 hrs of my run in period. Everything went fine and the boat exceeded my expectations! The dealer in the USA had completed a 30 min sea trial on the boat before shipping the boat to me.

So I now have 5 hours out of the way and 5 to go!

Beat me to it Triple with the Motor USA link.

I, unfortunately due to being cleaned up by a guy on his mobile whilst driving; had the experience of breaking in two brand new 1000cc v-twin sportsbikes inside a 6 month period. Both bikes were the same make, model and build year. One was broken in with the soft approach as per the manual. While I was off the bike, I found that guide and the new one was broken in the hard and fast way straight out of the dealership. IMHO, the result was that the second bike was a much better performer - especially of idle.

It will be interesting to see the printout at 20hrs to see if they went WOT in that 30 minute period.
