If you get 5 years out of one with regular servicing why quibble just get a new one and have another 5 years of peace of mind. If you need to use one and it fails you get no second chance. Same if you are wearing one that is out of date and are flipped overboard are you going to say oops hop back on board and change over to a foam filled?

you should watch some bar crossing footage on the tube of You;s not quite as easy to just get back in a boat.. or even get near a boat.
but thats just me. each to their own.

Got a good zip up foam jacket and is the one I would use if I have time, but have a stormy seas inflatable that i get serviced 12 monthly by qualified marine services shop that i wear when crossing bars or fishing offshore by myself. Also have 2 marlin inflatables that I self test as per manufacturers specifications 12 monthly for my deckies when required. Keep a waterproff copy of latest test results and a copy of the manufacturer specifications with the inflatables. At the first sign of deteriation on any of the units, I will replace them. As skipper of the boat it is my duty that all safety equipment is servicable and correct for the area I am fishing. I don't take this lightly and if I am on somebody elese's boat and an emergency happens, I don't want to be reaching for something that might not work. A lot of times it will be family members that are with you on the boat, so what price would you put on their lives in an emergency. $ 11.00 foamies might be legal, but just don't cut it with me. My opinion but I am sure a lot of people will agree with me.

    Jeff.
Quality is still delivering long after you have forgotten the price.
