Thread: Chartplotter or iPad?

    Re: Chartplotter or iPad?

I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 running Navionics and it is incredible to use.
100km offshore and it works superbly.
The only issue is I am having trouble finding a waterproof case for it.
There seems to be some good ones around for the Apple gear but not for Android units. Most that are available are mostly splash proof.
I use the Railblaza tablet mount with a starport base and so far it has been really good offshore in some horrible conditions.

For under $300 you can get a dedicated colour chartplotter with base maps.
It may not be the biggest screen but really how big does your chartplotter have to be?

RAM Tough Tray 2 on ball mount. Grips like crazy. ACER Iconia in zip lock baggy. Does not overheat and excellent screen (how big do you need? Depends on how far away you sit and how old you are...). The tray takes 10 seconds to remove and put in my Land Rover and then Memory Maps gets turned on with AusTopo...brilliant.

I am about to go an IPAD Air 128gb 4g for work use and it will get the latest navionics also. Same tray, but probably Lifeproof waterproof case that comes with a lifejacket option (floating) and it will all fit in the tray nicely.

The problem with Android is lack of cases!

You need the ipad with 3G

I don't think you can get an IPAD without wifi though.

You need the wifi and sim card slot...you cannot get one without wifi and the phone card slot is required for GPS not for phone towers but because the 3g/4g chipset has the GPS card built in Cheers
