Lowrance 2+3 year warranty
Interested if anyone has any real world figures on how much a replacement unit cost them once theirs had failed out of warranty.
I Had a unit fail just out of warranty and the upgrde price they originally quoted me was under $100 less than the unit's retail price.
There was a guy in Townsville whose HDS10 had a dodgy button. They wanted $1099 +gst to replace it (1 month out of warranty) .

it wasn't untill he posted on the USA lowrance facebook page that he got some attention.
They may have changed their policy in recent times (consumer law requores it) but they still wont publicise or make known to prospective buyers prices it costs to upgrade (no repair still as far as I know). So replacement or often upgrade is only option if your sounder has been discontinued.
So If I was to buy a HDS12 for $4500 RRP and it fails after 5 years it is a throwaway item. If it fails after two years you are at the mercy of whatever lowrance thinks they can get away with charging you to replace...

Lowrance sometimes offer a very reasonable extended warranty after two years, don't know why they don't promote it more, if your worried maybe call the service centre and try to sign up.
