    light braid recomendations

    Hi all,
I am in the process of trying some light / ultra light fishing for the first time. Although have my own favourite brands of braid that use in heavier lines I find them a bit limp for want of a better word in the very light class. I do not get great wind knots but rather the limp line seems to tangle around the guides or blank I assume from the moisture the line has picked up and clinging to the blank or guide resulting in throwing the lure off at times when casting. I am using a light Samaki rod with K guides and a 1000 size Shimano Biomaster reel. I have thought about going to the dark side and using the fused lines such as Fireline, Nanofil.
Your thoughts and advise and different experiences would be appreciated

Powerpro is relatively trouble free, but if you want to completely avoid the problem buy some cheapo fireline.

I use Tasline / SASbraid but is is as limp as you can ever find, my preference though. Definitely would not be looking at that if you after something a tad stiff to avoid any tangles.

Tasline casts a country mile further than anything else i have used, including 4lb nanofil. I do get the occasional tip wrap or guide wrap, but I want that extreme castability.

I have power pro 5lb on one of my spin gear and it seems to be ok. I gave up on fireline due to getting the occasional spool that just fails at all sorts of spots. Never had that issue with power pro. I also have some 4lb PE on another rod, but I am undecided a bit on that.
I am so happy to wake up in the morning.

    Beats the alternative!

    Re: light braid recomendations

I used 4 and 6lb Fireline for years without any drama then tried some Nitlon braid in 6lb and had the same experience as you with it wrapping around my rod tip/guides when it was wet. I used to call it the maypole effect and it was so frustrating that I took it off and went back to fireline. What is wrong with using a braid that is fused snd initially stiff until it breaks in fairly quickly? The fish don't seem to mind.

I have been using Fireline Exceed for some time now and it suits my purposes well.

Like you I have been a convert to SAS Braid for many applications and agree with you about it's castability, great for my bait fishing etc however this ultra light outfit I am using is strictly cast and retrieve stuff all day. The distance you get with it is great but if you throw off 1 or 2 lures a day it starts getting expensive. At the moment we are using a lot of the Sunline Super PE which is a great general purpose line, when it is new it is great but given a few trips of cast and retrieve it looses the little stiffness it had and the problems start. I am leaning toward either Nanofil or the Exceed to avoid the problem, I am unsure about the straight fireline.

I use Nonfil on my really light gear, and have never had a problem with it. Mind you, I don't have the experience of a full day of cast and retrieve. I tend to bait fish or jig.

    Hi Peter,
Could I ask you for the type of knot that you use to join the Nanofil main line to the leader and what size you use for both for both?

    Re: light braid recomendations

I have been using 4lb Nanofil on my light spin gear & find it very good. I use a seven or eight wrap surgeons knot on all my main line to leader material connections & have never had a knot fail.

    Cheers Andrew.

3 or 4lb Stren Microfuse is nice to use as well. True braids don't seem to like the small 1000 sized spools

    Re: light braid recomendations

The knot I use is called a fly loop. I can't tie any of the fancy ones successfully. I asked a young guy at BCF to tie a knot in some light line he wanted to sell me, but he gave up after breaking it four times. Funny.

This knot is easy, and I haven't had it fail yet.

Just to clarify, my hands are a bit stuffed. I understand HOW to tie them, just can't make my fingers do it. The fly loop is simple.

Try the Hercules fused braid from Kmart. It's Sufix no ifs or butts. I had a dud batch of Fireline quite a few years ago and in a hurry board some of this stuff and still use it for snapper plastic fishing. Highly recommended.

Following on, here is a link the fly loop. This guy uses Nanofil.

What I have found is that if I accidentally cross the lines over in the wrong way while tying the loop, it breaks under test, but if it survives being pulled down tight (probably two out of three for me), it stays the distance. Goes through runners well if the tags aren't too long. You shouldn't need much tag if you pull it down tight.

That's a pretty interesting take on it peter; thanks for the link I will give this a bit f a go. It appears that the Nanofil is the way to go so I will pick some up in a day or two and hopefully that will be the end of what has been termed "the maypole effect" (very appropriate) from one of the posts above.

I didn't mention that I'm using 4lb Nanofil on my light rod.
