    We use to catch them when I was a kid. Forgotten their name. As far as I recall they where poisonous.

    Looks a bit like a Black Rabbitfish/spinefoot

    Yep, Happy Moment, black trevally, spinefoot, black rabbitfish all that critter in the photo.
    Did you get spined? Helluva lot of fun.

    Actually they are very good eating fish if you don't spine yourself.

    Yep happy moment. Named so because it is a "happy moment" when they spine you. We also used eat them

    My first thought was black trev/happy moment as well but it's body shape and eyes/mouth configuration don't really line up.

    I agree it's not a happy moment had far to many unhappy moments with them to recognise one. I have seen your catch before but am not familiar with the name.

    Perhaps one from the butterfish family ? But no it is in fact a golden-lined spinefoot Siganus guttatus ( Bloch). My encounters have been the black spinefoot they look significantly different.
