    Yabby pump maintenance

Had to put my yabby pump away recently without the chance to wash it down and now I notice that it's a bit stiff and the shaft/rod that runs through the middle has a bit of surface rust on it. Nothing major and I'm sure it's all fine but I am just wondering if I should grease that rod and if yes what grease you would recommend using?

The shaft/rod I am referring to is the one the washer mount on not the cylinder it slides up.

Thoughts? What do the rest of you guys do for yabby pump maintenance?

I just hit mine with a bit of cooking oil after use.

I smear some around the inside of the tube and pump it a few times and then back the wing nut off, give the thread and nut a good hit with cooking oil and it's good as new 20 years later.

I do nothing much then every year or so nip the washer nult up a bit. Every ten years or so I buy a new washer. A bit of antisieze on the nut when new will repay the TLC down the track

    Re: Yabby pump maintenance

I have several I use regularly with the boys on the Connect Program (http://www.su-connect.org.au/) thanks to a generous donor on Ausfish and a few I bought cheap second hand. I find that the Force Ten ones from Big W are a piece of junk and not stainless at all but cheap Chinese rubbish and 'they will die' any way. Having said that all pumps will last longer if you wash them out with fresh water and I dunk them in a fresh water bucket and pump out all the sand etc. I then let them sit in fresh water for a few days after a 3 day trip and I always back the washer off completely. I never oil any of my pumps and believe me all of our gear cops a hiding but after plenty of trips and heaps of work all pumps are as good as new except the Force Ten ones and I put it down to a good clean out and proper drying out.

Thanks for the feedback guys, might try a really light smear of cooking oil and that should do it.
