    crescent tailed bigeye

caught one of these Friday off lady Musgrave. I have seen a few on the trawler sorting tray but only little ones. this one was fair size so I chucked him in the box. nice looking white fillets. anyone eaten one before and if so how was it?

Just had a look in the Grants and its close realitive the red bullseye is listed as poor eating so I guess it would be much the same.

thanks mark. think i will give it a go anyway as it does look good. was really trying to ascertain if it was noxious or safe to eat and couldn't find any info to that effect. i will post up my opinion of the quality after eating (should i survive).

Just because it's red and comes from the reef - doesn't mean you can eat it....

but as one can see a green light beside the name either it was a great feed or someone else is logging on as Netmaker...

too true, which is why i was asking. at least it doesn't appear on the noxious or no take list. as i will be cooking it up at perry's tomorrow arv, there may be a few unwitting testers available

    Re: crescent tailed bigeye

well, I can finally report on the eating qualities of said fish and in my book it rated better than the maori cod. sweet and tasty with a nice firm yet flaky texture. I have developed a slight twitch but that could be the rum or beer. no-one else seemed to suffer any bad side effects either so I reckon it is safe to eat. will wait for the morning for the final analysis. now I need to work out how to convince bill to abandon chasing big reds and go looking for the little big eyes...
