    Aluminium Bait Tank

hey guys im thinking of building my own alloy bait tank to a custom size to suit my tinny seeing as no body makes small 10-12L bait tanks, it'll be for poddy mullet and every now and again a few yakkas
im just wondering for a small tank around 200x200x250mm L/D/H will 1.6mm checker plate be sufficient? ill post up pictures as i build it

i will have to get out the vainer's tomorrow and measure the sheet i just bought seems very thin

picked up a full 8x4 sheet of 5005 aluminium 1.6mm

i'd consider a round tank but i dont have a sheet roller on hand or know anyone with one

    Re: Aluminium Bait Tank

i was having welding difficulties earlier but got it sorted late this afternoon and ran out of argon, this 1.6mm sheet is a pain in the ass to weld 3mm is much easier for me as i teach my self to tig weld aluminium

ill hide my horrid welding pics and only show on that came out nice lol

the tank is very sturdy thanks for the reassurance guys

im still yet to finish it off with plumbing and weld a top on than cut out a hole

    Re: Aluminium Bait Tank

49-56amps lowest setting on frequency, i think ive added to much filler but it was needed i think as im get to much penetration but any less amps i dont get a pool going

    Re: Aluminium Bait Tank

Maybe back it with stainless flat bar If you have too much trouble. Try not to weld the whole joint in one go step it out in halves, thirds, quarters etc and it will help if you wire brush it( stainless only). What do you cut the material with? Size of filler wire?

Far far Far from an ally expert but the main rules are:
    No gaps
    Plenty of tacks
    Cleanliness
No flap disc/ grinding disc/ cutting disc unless they are specifically for aluminium
Right size tungsten / filler wire?

Don't poor heaps of heat into the job all at once

Don't no if you have looked but you tube has some good tips http://m.youtube.com/results?q=how%2...92.DAQ-_Ouhk_w

thats an idea i didnt think of, placing steel behind the welds that would have helped a lot

i used a jigsaw with metal cutting blade

i have some small gaps that seem to be difficult to weld as it just blows thru

using 1.6mm white tungsten with 1.6mm 5354? probably wrong number filler rods

if i had thought about backing it with SS that would have solved all my problems to late now bugger!

    Re: Aluminium Bait Tank

i use a nice big copper block and as previously sugested lots of tacks.

It should do the job the way it is good on you for trying it yourself
