    Boat Shopping day....Very Disappointing

Went and looked at a few boats today, all private sales. I must say, big big disappointment.

The photos in the ads were nothing like the acutual boats. Not one of them was cleaned up, shyte lying everywhjere in the boat, how do they expect buyers to get excited abouth their boats if they cant even tidy them up for prospective buyers?

If you want a sale people, at least clean them up, wash them, tidy the inside, stow the gear where it should be. Detail the vessel...... doesnt need to be professional detailing, just spend some bloody elbow grease on it and the difference will be dramatic, and also add dollars to the value.

I found the same thing when I was looking recently. I came to understand quickly that you cant really judge by the photos when dealing with older boats. They never look as good in the flesh.
Really makes you wonder how people expect to sell boats when they put no effort at all into presentation for potential buyers. Even some boats in that yard at Stayplton were dirty and not cleaned up well enough for sale. I realise that most of those boats are on consignment, but surely the yard could tell the owners what is needed to get a sale.

It's not so funny but in a way it gives you an insight into the care and real condition of some people's boats and these are the ones you probably need to be weary of , lots of luck and I can only agree with you . How do they expect to sell them but also look out for the ones that are are made to look great but have hidden problems particularly with glass ......Matt
Ps lots of luck with your search and don't settle for close enough it's a buyers market and plenty on offer ...😎😎😎😎

    G'day

All too true, same as when I speak with clients about detailing and why it's important.

#1, it's a LOT cheaper than a paintjob later down the track.

#2, will make the boat easier to clean.

#3, will retain the value of the boat much much more, and make a sale so much easier and concrete the asking price much much more.

#4, pride in what you have, when pulled up for a check in my thundercat about 2 years ago by the water police, they commented that it was the best setup one they'd seen. I also received the same comment two weeks ago from fisheries about my current platey.

Detailing is one of the first things the brokerages suggest, it's all about presentation. There's a number of boats that have refused to be detailed for sale, couple that with an unrealistic asking price and they just sit, and cost the owners a LOT more than they would have in the long run and they just do not sell.

At the end of the day mike, if the boat is what you're looking for, adjust their asking price accordingly

I tend to prefer to see a boat I'm going to buy in all its natural glory rather than tarted up to make the sale. It will give you a better idea of how the vessel has been maintained. A facelift by a professional such as Dave could hide a lot of years of neglect

    G'day

Think of it as a first date.... would you rather the woman look the best she can, or as she rolled out of bed?

The last 2 private boats I looked at were rough as guts too. One of the vendors was trying to tell me how he's a perfectionist, and the second anything needed work, he was on to it. Was he talking about THIS boat??? With the broken canopy, torn cushions, rusty motors, non functioning sounder, dirt and rust stains everywhere. Surely he must have another boat that he practises his OCD on??? I came home and looked at my considerably older rig with pride!!

    Hi Marlin Mike,
I read your point but am wondering what sort of rigs you are looking at?

I would try and hone in on boats that are fully garaged from which you can see from the photos. I know that's no guarantee, however it's a good starting point.

    Gday Marlin Mike,
    All too true Mate.
Made a watchlist on Gumtree as I only just purchased a boat 2 months ago.
Narrowed them down and went and had a look at a tinny that fitted the bill and was right up my street to what I was looking for.
Organised to have a look at it, drove all the way down to Redland area from up near Caboolture and let me tell you, what a disappointment.
Had shite all through the boat, like it was a storage shed in a hull. Crappy plastic chairs, old crab pots, trailer had flat tyres, no offer to start the motor, stained on the hull...
Couldn't really see the true boat that it was, which was a shame.
Anyway went to see another tinny straight after, like chalk and cheese...this one was immaculate, garaged, neat and tidy inside, plus the offer of taking me out for a road test.
Well I snapped this one up and for less than the messy one was asking, and now she's sitting proudly at my place...got a 1 year old bow mount Minn Kota thrown in as part of the deal too...
The messy one's still on Gumtree needless to say.
