Boat came with a yamaha 225 four stroke (wanted get a four stroke to see what all the fuss was about). Used it for about 3 weeks and just wasnt happy with it, hole shot just doesnt compare to a DI 2 stroke. It probably took the boat a good 8-10 seconds to get on to plane and thats engine trim in and trim tabs deployed. Once on plane she was ok, but i would always be needing to be sitting in the high revs (close to 5000rpm) and at those revs the engine is loud. I think if you plan to go 4stroke you really need to over power it just to get similar performance. Best to drive the same boat with the 2 different motors. You'll see the difference in torque.
a 24 foot glass boat with a single early generation Yammie 225 4 stroke would be not very enthusiastic at the best of times and it also sounds like the prop was wrong if it wouldn't plane under 5,000rpm !!!

Yes its a robalo r235 heavy little thing, a little over 2t dry. Add fuel and water and gear probably 2.5t. Had a mirage 15x17pitch prop. Seems like many of these boats were released with this motor. Yamaha guys said it was the right prop. Cruise was about 22-24kts (4500-5000rpm) and top speed 30knts (5800rpm). But in saying that it took ages to get there and when it did it sounded like the motor was working hard to stay there. Im not saying 4strokes are bad, im just saying if you were going to get one i would get something higher in HP than its 2stroke counterpart.

I think it would be safe to say the same boat would perform much better if it had say a 225 etec or opti?

The same boat would perform heaps better with a 225 4.2L yammy, 225 honda, 225 suzuki...

The 4.2l yamaha perhaps because its 4.2l capacity, but not the others. I know a guy that has the honda 225 on the same boat and performs the same 31kt top speed. As i said nothing wrong with 4 strokes you just need em slightly bigger in HP.

Some really good experiences and info on here just helped me make up my mind to stay with the trusty old 4 banger. Cheers
