As I come out of Bris river, I simply point directly to Comby and turn on the Autohelm. The only time i deviate is to avoid fishos, ships and the odd marker or 10. That said, when i cross the bay in 25 - 30 knots wind, I will stay in the main channels. When the weather is 25 to 35 knots it is essential to have the tide and wind running the same direction. If you do that it is like any open water 25/30knot day, but if they are opposing..... well lets just say you will probably make headlines in the morning paper.
Also remember that when winds are east and SE, the conditions are beautiful up close against moreton near tangalooma. Just be prepared for a slightly bumpy ride home. Time to get out there. It is a beautiful part of the world. Phil
The reason I was slightly concerned about crossing banks is because I thought the change of depth would stand up the waves sharply. I really don't want to make the news....
But you blokes are giving me the impression heave ho and off I go.... No obstacles unless wind against tide. Goodo.... thanks.
You'll be able to see well in advance if those middle of the bay banks (Central, Western etc) are standing up. Even at low tide they're 2m+ but going from 20-30m to 2m in about 100yds can freak you out But you can see kilometers ahead if they're white and surfy, or just a bit lumpy and sometimes calm as a milpond. If I'm going down towards 4 beacons from Skirmish, I dodge south of all the banks anyway. If I'm going to Tangas via Bulwer I skirt around the northern end. It's only about another 5 mins to go around them and get home safely.
I also find just as you go around the tip of Comby to turn NE it's very shallow there and can get quite lumpy. You'll see where the swell (even on a calm day, just the big oceanic swell) will roll in and what to avoid. A lot of it is common sense (god forbid I just swing wide a few hundred meters, better to be safe than swamped by a rogue wave that sneaks up on you.
So managed to get out yesterday, and the weather was perfect. The W tended NW in the afternoon and I think I had the smoothest trip back across the bay ever.
Went to Brennan's thanks to Horse's suggestion. Only picked up a few undersized squire, about 5 scorpion cod. But just at the end of the session landed this little guy. Didn't have scales on board to weigh him but guessing 25-30kg and about 120-130cm, the only ruler I had was 1m. You can see I come prepared for this sort of thing right
This guy we let go after a few quick pics. Such a nice fish, bent a few hooks before we finally got him. Bugger was pinching bait for hours !
Well done FandR . That is going to be my next excursion. Did the Gold Coast last weekend and I am thinking with the weather forecast for this weekend I may head that way. Good post and great help from the lads. Cheers
Yeah now I'm comfortable with getting to Brennan's (weather permitting) I'll be able to skip north to Hutchies in the future without too much angst.
Was a pretty awesome day, had about a dozen whales pass real close. A few females with calves and then some boasting males slapping, breaching and fin waving etc. Magic time of year for that. Makes you feel very small though They really do seem to like hanging around just off the cape.
As for the reef. It's hard to miss, 32-35m ocean floor pops up cleanly to a 20m reef with 15m bommies. Looked magic on the sounder, but even on a weekday was a bit of a car park
