    North Moreton Artificals and such.

    Hey guys,

I know a lot of you seem to travel from the south'ish side of Brisbane, so I hear a lot about Mud, Peel, Rous etc. I'm at Bribie and the travel time across the bay I just don't think is worth it (or is it ?). Having Morteon right on my doorstep, I'm getting to know the inside of the northern end of the bay, but off the north tip and outside I'm still a bit weary of.

If any guys up this north side of Brissy go to the artificials, or around the cape (not too far, I'm not going to Deep Tempest just yet and wouldn't mind a tag along let me know. I'm just weary of going out of my comfort zone solo at this point. I have a healthy respect for the bay and how it can turn on you. I don't think Wide Caloundra is in my range, and again I'd certainly not being headed that far solo at this point.

Not asking for anyone to take me to their favourite spot X, but if anyone is going on a trip and wouldn't mind another boat for company by all means let me know. I've already marked out a lot of the reef balls on the NM Artis when I snuck up there once but the weather turned on me and I got out after about an hour, but I could see some great show on the sounder.

Mate, the problem is that while there are some great fishing spots available from the Northside the vast majority of the truly great fishermen live on the Southside
I'm sure a few of the guys who fish that area will give you the heads up. If not just take a run out to Brennans or Hutchinsons to find plenty of fish holding structure. on a good weekend its like Queen St out there

Hi FnR, Bribie is great stepping off point for moreton, but always be wary of the weather as the combination of shoals/sandbars, swell and wind waves can make crossing extremely dangerous. Until you get a lay of the land/bay, always follow the shipping channel. Its not to save your prop, but rather to avoid breaking waves/chop which happen all too commonly up that way.

I'm in a 5.3m Quintrex Freedom Sport. It's a quite capable boat, I'm just probably being overly cautious (that's not a bad thing ) I put a new Suzuki 115hp 4str on the back about 18 months ago and it's efficiency and range are awesome. I can go from Bribie to the inside of Moreton from Bulwer to Lucinda bay drifting with the motor on most of the session and still only use half a tank of juice. Kinda why I think going north shouldn't be a problem etc.

    Thanks for the suggestions Horse

    FnR,

I used to solo fish the Cape, Barwons, and even the shelf in my 5.6 Quinnie with a 115 4s. So the boat can do it on the right day, and as OR24 said, just be aware that the top the bay can get pretty nasty with wind against tide.

    FnR,

Me and the old man have a stacer 519 easy rider (virtually exact same boat to yours), with a 90 on the back and we have been out to deep tempest and square patch in it no worries and also go out through the spb, it is important to pick your day but its definitely do'able. going around the cape isnt bad if you know the route to take and just start with the areas like brennans and hutchies as horse said then as you get more comfortable you can try further out.

Yeah I've seen the Central and Western banks stand up in bad weather like you could surf on them. Definitely areas to steer clear of when the weather makes it into a washing machine. Tues is looking like a good shot, 5-10 W/NW and pretty gentle swell. I'll lurk up to Bulwer and if it's looking glassy I'll try and sneak around to Brennans for a look see. I'm just a bit weary around this time last year I was just NW of Comby in about 7m of water and a humpback surfaced about 30ft off my starboard side. Certainly reminds you how small you are out there.

Thanks for the suggestions and encouragement

    I love your nickname Fil...

    Good luck with your adventures.

I go south mostly but northern bay occasionally. 5.75m glass cuddy. I too have a healthy respect for the sharp breakers that can stand up in that area.

But as far as beauty and open waters, it feels great to be in the northern bay on a good day. I am thinking I might do a trip around cape Moreton but am unsure of the course to take. I might do a plot and post it up here for comment if you don't mind the partial thread hijack?

    Hey Walrus,

Yeah the name is a bit of an in-joke, I mostly sportfish

No worries if you want to post that in here. I'm trying to learn from the more seasoned bay fishos, and the more info the better.

I just looked outside this morning and at least in the passage it's like glass. The forecast is meant to get better Mon and Tues so lookin good !

    Thanks Philly.

I was thinking Scarby to Moreton then close in around the top. Not sure if that's advisable?

No need to go that far south, just follow the channel that leads to the m3

You can skip across the banks with a bit of tide under you if conditions are good. Areas like the run around Comby can get pretty exiting if the run is opposite the wind direction. I have had dream runs out only to face 1.5m static pressure waves on the way back in. They don't seem to build like on SPB so if you take it steady there's no real issue

Ah thanks guys. So if you go to M3 do you cross Yule banks? Or go round the bottom?
