Dugong hangs at turner camp rd ,Bribie Island

Well I'll start this off by asking if anyone else has had any close encounters with dugong's here? Went down for a flick this afternoon on the incoming tide to try and hone my very bad SP fishing skills with no success ,I'm sure people in the distance were having a laugh and i felt pretty embarrassed for myself lol,but that's another story.

I was looking at the glass house mountains in the distance when i heard a sort of whale blow hole sound........and to my right about 10 meters away was this little beast lurking around the weed bed having a feed. Not at all a fishing story but just an interesting animal to watch in the wild .

The step daughter has had an encounter. She was fishing from the bank on Bribie near the bridge and foul hooked one. It was dark o'clock, swam past her and her 2 little ones, gave a blow, scared the bejeezus out of all of them then found her hook. It straightened out her hook and swam off leaving them shaking in their jap safety boots.

They used to be a very common sight back 30 yrs ago in the passage, especially around Tripcony Bight.
Last one I saw was south of Toorbul before Ningi Creek about 4 years ago.

I see about 1 every 6 weeks fishing the passage, they look like little sperm whales in the water.

I saw one just outside the mouth if Tingalpa creek about 6-8 months ago - surfaced about 30 metres from the boat and made that "blowhole" sound. Likewise, it scared the hell out of me too, it was so loud!!!

See them fairly regularly in the straits. Really cool watching them.

You see quit a few of them over on the banks at Amity Pt, the area is a no plane zone for that reason.

Mate the flathead dont care how skillful you are, put a lure in front of one and your a chance. I was always told and read that you should use as light a jig head as possible and i still do that but my dad fished with me one day in shallow water with a jig head that would have killed the flatties if it hit em on the head, he caught 3 fish 65,69 and 74cm to my squat, its more a matter of finding where the fish are laying than looking good.
    cheers
