    Mud Island - bit perplexed

I was at Mud on Sunday - now I admit it was way too busy to drift the Eastern side for snapper using plastics but two things that piqued my interest, only having fished mud a few times:

    1. Why was there only 3 boats or so on the Western side of the Island on Sunday, in fairly close in shallower water (I didnt do any good in 6-9 m on that side);

    2. Why were there so many boats anchored within spitting distance of each other on the Western shallow reefs. I am assuming they were trying to burley up some snapper and bait fishing, but does it work there?

    Cheers

Dave O mighty MUD king you did not answer the question. "Why was there only 3 boats or so on the Western side of the Island and fifty on the East side.
Maturity is not when we start speaking BIG things,it is when we start understanding small things

hahahaha (again). my personal opinion on why the east is ALWAYS more crowded than the west:

    1. it is farther to travel to (and must therefore hold more fish)
    2. it is closer to the open sea (and must therefore hold more fish)
    3. the grazier wreck is on that side (and must therefore hold more fish)
    4. everyone else goes there so it must hold more fish

my personal opinion on the best side of the island to fish:

any side of the island not covered in points 1 - 4 above (unless you are first there)

Just think about it. The water is less than 10m deep. If one area has 30 boats stooging around and dropping anchors all over the place then where do you think the bigger and wiser Snapps will go?

    2. Why were there so many boats anchored within spitting distance of each other on the Western shallow reefs. I try to avoid most boats and especially the clang, clang bang of those throwing anchor down the side of their boats. Different things is the key for me anyway and avoid days out when you may be suspicious that netmaker may be in the vicinity, I swear all of my good snapper have come far from netmaker though he smashes some big ones near me. I was nearly ready to cry when I seen his rod buckled over saturday morning.

Unlike Davo I do not believe that MUD is a friendly place :-p

Yep it seemed to me that the car park on the East just couldn't produce. I will try to hit mud soon mid week and just spend the day drifting a couple of tide changes from early oclock...I was only there on the weekend because it was the last couple of good days I could take the kids. Its great to see them working plastics and catching fish. The eldest is taking a keen interest in the sounder...he liked seeing the reef balls with fish just off the bottom near them over at Peel on sat on the 620 and he is getting good at picking bait balls.

    What Horse said...

I go out of my way to get away from the crowds. More than 2 boats within a couple of hundred meters and I'll move. Snapper don't get big in the bay by hanging around fishing boats.

BTW I always fish on the Northern side of mud, mainly because I know of a few spots where there are rarely other boats.

In answer to your other comment about does it work to use burley & baits, that's all I do at mud cause as yet i haven't mastered the SP's. I do alright have caught many a snapper there over the years.

Don't be afraid to trust your sounder and find some fish away from the usual spots and the crowds, good luck

Thanks Nabba - yep driving the sounder is a big thing. I have got some happy results by trusting it - quite often now I will see bait and or fish and drift a plastic for a touch or catch - its a good feeling.
