    Diamond Trevally In Noosa River

Been fishing the Noosa River with "Pistol" Pete Morris over the past couple of months and one session in particular produced some beautiful looking and great fighting Diamond Trevally on soft plastics. Very rarely do you see these fish on video so for those of you who like something a little different here's a video we made of the session.

Great stuff goldfinch, what happened to pistol pete anyway. That bloke was and looks like still is a very passionate fisherman, shame he doesn't post anymore. Ben

    Hey Dave, great session mate.

Just a question that has been on my mind for a while about a lit of soft plastic fisherman. I am a novis at best about soft plastics, so please realise I'm not criticising anything, just trying to learn.

Why would you use 4 pound main line and 8 pound leader? Why not just use 8 pound line? Particulay on a fish like that, that is not going to wrap you around a bombie, or is loaded with teeth?

Does your prawn act differently with the lighter mainline? Or is it just to make if more sporting?

    Thanks
    Rob

Good Question Rob. I am certainly no expert when it comes to soft plastics fishing and Pistol Pete has a lot more experience fishing the river than me but IMO, the lighter the mainline and the rod, the more sensitivity is felt from the lure to the rod tip, therefore giving me more chance of feeling every single touch on the lure. Also the lighter the line the less chance of it being visible to fish in shallow water. The difference between 4 and 8lb is minimal but I guess fishing is a game of mm's :-). It also makes for a great sporting challenge.

Just to add to the post above about the mainline, the 4pd will give you much better casting ability as well as less line resistance in the water.

The other reason for the different line class between line and leader is that you can keep an outfit spooled with whatever line class you like to use and then just adjust your leader type to suit the style of fishing you want to do. For example if they were chasing finicky bream you could use exactly the same outfit with a 4pd leader or if you are throwing surface lures you would change to a monofilament leader as it floats where fluorocarbon sinks, you could even decide to torture yourself and chase jacks and try tying on 14pd-20pd leader and do it all using the same outfit.

There are lots of subtle little differences that can be noted with light line fishing, they don't call it finesse fishing for nothing....

Its a big learning curve when you're new to it, but very rewarding if you persist and succeed.

Were you guys casting at feeding fish, working the plastics around the bottom, or working the moored boats?

In this case Kev, we were casting at moored boats in the deeper section of Woods bay and slowly retrieving the lures on the bottom back to the boat. Most of the strikes came pretty close to the boat. Great fun on the light gear. Pistol Pete has been catching Goldens 70cm+ around the same area.
