Dont talk to me about Barra. Took my boys to Monduran last year in the middle of Barra season. A full day on the water with the local guide from Bucca and not a sausage. We went everywhere and my boys cast overheads like demons - they are young, but are quiet, and cast onto lilly ads and hop lures off them into the water and do the right retrieves and mix it up - guide couldnt believe it. So there were 4 of us casting all over the place - guide included and our hands got sore from casting. You could see the buggers on his sidescan Lowrance. He couldnt explain it. Later that afternoon we were driving away and some rain came in so the Barrometer might have been jumping - thats all I could put it down to. The closest we came was when a big one near the shore shouldered a lure out of his territory - not even a foul hook up! Dont talk to me about bloody Barra! Arghhh!!

    Cheers

And therein lies the attraction for many, no matter how much you think you have them worked out, they can still throw it all back in your face. They can be very challenging, that's for sure. They can fight too, some go harder than others, no idea why though. I remember one I hooked in Callide dam years ago, I couldn't put enough pressure on him to even slow him down using 30lb braid, charged off like a freight train for a good 30 or 40 metres then promptly threw the lure, leaving me with a dumb look on my face. Had a few from monduran that went hard like that too. I love fishing for them.

Hi all, this is a great thread, and proves that everyone has different tastes/expectations/preferences and desires, if not we would all be chasing the same species, with the same lure, same rod, same boat etc ( nightmare! ).
I live in the Capricornia region, and are blessed with a multitude of options to catch a fish, I own an offshore boat and a 4.1 poly and although I love stretching my arms on a 10 kg red or swimming a bait or jigging for a spanno, I love chasing barra. There is something special about perfect lure selection/placement and presentation enticing a Barra to bite. Some of my most memorable trips are 10 mins from home catching floodwater barra up to 50cm in 3 foot of running floodwater around bridge culverts, trees, fences etc. An extraordinary experience none the less, but the fight those 40cm barra put on in rushing floodwater is incredible. And another positive for chasing barra in estuaries, look at the diverse range of species you can often catch while targeting barra, we have caught tarpon, cod, flathead, mangrove jack, trevally, queenfish, catfish and jew. Whether its live/dead baiting, flicking lures or trolling, the thrill of a hookup from any fish is contagious and keeps you coming back for more.

    Cheers and tight lines.
