Thread: The tides are turning for overseas shopping

The tides are turning for overseas shopping

Well the day has come that with the lowering exchange rate, bank fee's etc I have found a sounder for 70 AUD more expensive then the cheapest I can find over seas for!! < after freight etc etc> and I get the real warranty..

Not saying that everything is the same as I'll still get my transducers from the states but the sounder its self just isnt worth it..

My point is its worth having a good look around in australia as well as its going to get more common and keep in mind that the bank will offer about 4c less then the figure you see on TV for the AU $ topped with the fee's and freight its getting close, and Paypal is worse with more fee's.

Happy days for the australian retailer, Happier still for the pirate australian wholesaler not so much for the smart aussie buyer.

I say this having half an Idea of what Im talking about as I've spend 1000's online on boating gear..Including the boat.

Anyway thats my rant for the day
    Happy bargain hunting

Certainly has taken some of the gloss of o/s buying but I still do the comparison based on the cost to my door. I still find it difficult to know why is costs me $10 to get something shipped from the US to my door but $40 to get it from 200km away to my door. I actually got my boat shipped here from the US for less than what I was quoted to bring a boat from Melbourne to here.

The edge is still with the O/S buy in most cases but you have to be savy about it and see if local is now a close enough option.

The wholesale importer will be rubbing their hands together and will probably bump the price up a bit more to screw over the local shop owner and the buying public.

I bought my boat when the dollar was 87c and it was still worth it.......even against a strengthening green back the u.s price is usually cheaper if you look hard enough and use some of the smaller guys over there.

    I agree with most things..
But this furuno 587 Im about to buy, with the $250 current furuno cashback.. it's 70 bucks difference.. < the transducers are more like 600 better off O/S mind you>

Just worth shopping around.. here as well is my point as I have gotten use to not even looking here half the time. sad but true..

I like to look at all the options and then decide on which is the best way to go. My most recent purchase o/s saved me around $400 on the local price. It was however before the dollar dipped so probably not the same margin now.
The thing that annoys me about the Furuno deal is that you have to pay the higher price and then claim the rebate back from them. Why can't the rebate be applied at the place of purchase and the retailer then claims the rebate?
Remember to always log on before heading offshore.

Crickies Dave, haven't you bought the Furuno yet - if you wait any longer you'll be in front buying in Aus. I'm sure the ex rate was north of $1.00 when you started looking.

so long as consumers dont think its the retailers "ripping" people off. when often the margin on multiples of thousand dollar items is less than 100 dollars. and thats a brick and motor shop. with staff and insurance and all the other things to care about.
im happy to price match where i can though

Re: The tides are turning for overseas shopping

I would rather buy locally as most, but the OS dealer I have bought from (Koala Marine) recently has the Furuno 587 for $1299 without tranducer (AUD) + delivery and Whitworths have the 587 priced at $2099- $250 cash back + delivery or the drive there.

With Furuno a warranty is less likely needed than the cheaper brands also. So I would take that risk for $550 on 1 item. After all the dealers just import them anyway, so you are only paying for warranty. Even if you cant avoid GST (such as a gift or the dealer lowering the price)the savings stack up.

PS, for only $70 difference you have found a good deal Dave. I would take the local one as well.

Yeah koala was where I have been looking, He's a very helpful bloke.. But with the 1299 plus 53 post then add at least 10% for GST etc is more like 1490 approx.

I can get here for 1800 less 250 rebate.
isnt much in it for a full warranty.

What do you mean "full warranty" Furuno has a worldwide warranty.
