Humminbird colour palette
Am still trying to read my sounder properly and after getting quite frustrated on my last trip out trying to find a 'reef' signal I realised that I had changed the colour palette from original settings. I have since reverted back to original colour settings which shows red as the most dominant colour but not knowing the area where I was fishing well enough has still got me questioning whether I have found reef or not?
If my colour settings are on the humminbird original palette and I am getting red colour return from the bottom does that mean I am above rock/reef? (I was drifting the eastern side of Mud last trip and it was red everywhere I drifted)

Re: Humminbird colour palette
Hi Mersey,
Can you post a screen shot? I can't remember which palette I'm using at the moment on my Humminbird but I'll check at home. With mine though red is a return for a hard bottom such as rock, coral will show as green/yellow sitting on top of the red as there's hard bottom underneath the coral. Fan coral sticks out like dogs balls! Do you have a sideimager? I'll post a pic from home showing some coral, I've posted some before on the forums but I'll have to find out where they are.
Also fish schools on my palette are red for a good thick show, or a solid big fish and they go to almost black for a superthick school. Bait is usually green(ish) and solitary mackerel are a thin line of green/yellow.
Cheers, post a pic later from home, Nick.

Ok mate, I think this is colour palette one. The fan coral is interesting as the one on the left has a lot more soft coral above the hard bottom (red line). The fan coral on the right has hard bottom close to the top of the coral. The thicker that red line, the harder (or thicker) the bottom, so you can tell that it's rock and the green/yellow on top shows that it's coral sitting on top of rock, and the sideimager and downimager helps show it's fan coral.
Cheers,
Nick.

Great post Nick....cheers - this is exactly what I have been seeing, I can remember getting lighter bluey/green mounds on top of the red signals which would have been the coral. i'm hoping for a trip out Thursday so will try and get some screen shots of my own up
