Re: Drum anchor winch of windlass??
Horses for courses, I have just up graded to a drum winch, my original windlass worked fine for 6 years and only replaced it as my wife bought me the drum winch as a present, the drum winch is quieter and faster, the speed is only an issue if you fish water deeper than 20m IMO. In the last 6 years I have not had the windlass jamb, the main reason that I changed is I have started to fish a lot of deeper water 30 + so the retrieve speed is a benefit and the 180 m capacity of the winch I bought is a bonus.
Windlass
Need enough drop for the rode not to tangle
Slower retrieve rate
Can be rope sensitive (will only work with certain ropes)
No limit to rode length if you have the patience
Drum winch
Mounting space can be an issue
Higher retrieve speed
Will work with any rope
Length of rode limited by drum/rope size
Quieter
Just my thoughts
