Thread: No longer a Mud Snapper virgin :-)

Wink No longer a Mud Snapper virgin :-)

Met up with SummerTrance again out at Mud for a few more lessons on how to catch nice Snapper.

What more could you ask for......

Choppy seas, wet ar...ummm....rear, wind & drizzle......

Busted off 1st cast, lost on the retrieve after the zzzzzzzz's peeled off.....bit the jig head clean off.
30cm Squire second cast, went back to be with mum & dad....

Then drift after drift until around 8.30 for nought.....

Correct me if I am wrong buddy, but we must have been into about the 4th drift on your marks when all of a sudden, the screaming zzzzzz's kicked in again.

Now, I have seen SummerTrance do this, SO, with absolutely NO trepidation whatsoever, I INTO this one.
Probably only peeled a 100mts max of braid, then back to the boat with a nod on the way just to let me know he was a Snap.
3 screams later, and a cupla runs near the boat I could see a flash out the back near the motor.....
Then he took off AGAIN......now I am goin to meself at least he is good size, maybe 60cms....whoooohooo

After the last run, he dutifully rose to the surface and floated gently to the ever awaiting net.

    72cms......I couldn't believe it...my FIRST Snap....AND a 70+ to boot

All I can say now is SPs' are a goer.....played with a 2 hook paternoster rig with fresh mullet....not even an INTEREST nibble.
    ALL hits were on SPs'.
Needless to say the paternoster set-up was retired for the rest of the day.

With all due respect, if it hadn't been for SummerT.....I would not be writing this today.

Thanks M8 for all your patience, guidance and expertise, as well as unselfishly inviting me along, for a well & truly GREAT first time experience.

Now I know ST didnt bag a fish today, but, he will in future now that he has his own boat again, finally.

    Cheers, Ray.

Gotta luv when a captain unselfishly takes you out and shows you what to do and you get results like that. Well done guys. What's the next step Ray, buy an entire shops worth of plastics like I have? There is professional councilling available now for the addiction before it gets too bad.

Got a bit too excited and posted in the wrong section aye Ive been watching the REPORTS section and wondered why you hadnt posted. haha

Anyways great fish and congrats. I need to clear things up for everyone. A few weeks ago Ray invited me out on his boat, and we fished Mud, which was a first for Ray.
Last week I got a new (to me) boat, and I gave Ray a call to say I was going out on Friday. Ray came out on his own boat. He caught that fish all himself, with the location and techniquies learnt on the previous trip, but he applied that and caught the fish with no help from me.

My result from the day was a big fat donut! Nothing, nada, zilch, not even an undersize. Weather was crap and worse than was forecast. Constant light rain made things uncomfortable. Ray getting a cracker fish made up for it.

Ill post up a photo later when home from work.

ST is a GREAT teacher....and with a willing pupil I may add....The kudos goes to ST

As far as the SPs' are concerned....now THAT is a whole new story ....JUST between ST & I

Got what I need......just need Kerri to hook up as well, when the times are right

    Thanks, Ray......and Kerri.....SOON

Trev......that HAT was a fathers day pressie about 2 years ago....BUT I now have the fish.....AND the knife to go with it.....FILLETING KNIFE that is

As far as being Mud Tart/Virgin.....it is still my contention that UNLESS you drift over a school of fish on the bite.....no matter WHAT techniche is employed, you will come up with ZILCH.
HOWEVER.......SP's will work where flesh will NOT....at least in the Bay anyways

M8, I think the BEST thing that ever happened to Kerri & I was that you sold your original boat close to 2 years ago.

NOW........Karma will give you what you missed over that time, along with helping someone new that you introduced to fishing with SPs'.

With the knowledge that you have selflessly imparted to myself & soon to be Kerri.....we can go out and expect a reasonable chance of catching a feed.

Screw the BIG fish.......I would rather bag out on 4 x under70s....and now have the chance to do JUST that.

Dont get me wrong.....I WAS impressed with my First catch.....but to bag OUT is my next goal. (maybe with ONE over 70 )

    Thanks again, Ray.
