Suitable light outfit

Hey guys,

I'm looking at purchasing an Abu Garcia Veritas spin combo from BCF. What are some opinions on them, if anyone has any experience with them. I plan on purchasing the 6'4" 1-3kg rod, and plan on using monofilament line. It has 7 ball bearings and a graphite rod, which seems to be much better than anything else in its price range. Considering its on sale at BCF for $159 it seems like a steal. I predominantly want to use it for soft plastics on bream and flathead, etc. Also, what are opinions on monofilament line? Ive heard mixed reviews.

Looking at the various pricings for the 2 components id say its not bad value, in saying that though ive not had much experience with Abu spinning reels only overheads. As long as the balance between the size of the reel and the rod feels nice they should give good use if looked after, graphite needs a little more care in the bumps and scratches department as opposed to fibreglass, and some of the reviews i read had broken tip problems, so treating it nice would be a priority(check the BCF warranty). Nothing wrong with mono but if i was spending the money on such an outfit id be using braid, i imagine its quite a sensitive rod so with braid you will feel the bites and takes so much better.

If I took a poll of how many fish soft plastics with Mono successfully, I'd say the results would be very much against mono for SPs in favour of braid so I agree with Mick. Don't know the reel or rod but 1 to 3kg sounds right if you are chasing bream. If there are a few of the same blank on the rack, test to see which rod is built on the backbone and you will likely have a nice combo. Make sure the drag of the reel is silky smooth.

Shimano Sahara is an excellent 1 piece rod and matches to a 2500 Sahara reel.. Really light and good fun for big bream. Better value than the Abu I believe.

Hi Alex,

I don't own a veritas but a mate that I fish with has replaced guides two or three times. Not sure if this issue has been addressed ie better guides. I would be looking at a Shimano combo. If you are looking for something a little heavier I fish with a 4-8kg Berkerly Dropshot. Great for in the bay but I also floatline with it offshore. Just a thought. At the end of the day as long as you are happy with whatever you purchase and enjoy using it that is all that matters. Happy shopping.

mate i nearly bought one of those combos when i saw them on special... that was until the day before when i spoke to 2 different people who said the reel crapped itself within first 5 fish caught. The rods looks nice though

thanks for the replies guys..... im thinking i might look at something in the shimano range... i quite like the symetre reel (i knows its a bit more expensive compared to the abu)... I already have a 6-8kg spin rod so i was really after something lighter purely for SPs... thnx for the input, guess like anything better to pay a little more for a rod and peace of mind

BCF have a nice combo for $200, Diawa Aird real matched with a Team Diawa TDT rod, comes in a 2-4 kg, 3-5kg or 4-8 kg, possibly a 1-3kg can't remember.
