Don't know about stanage bay, but up north, we fished the top and bottom of the tide, when there was little water movement (some places had an eight meter tide), caught a bunch of both fish, simple paternoster rig with pilchards, squid and mullet.

mate I've seen plenty of footage of them smashing them in the NT, simple paternoster with enough lead to get down there, exactly like you'd do off the reef normally.

Mate I've found slack water on the high to be best with some decent run either way.

Pattenoster rig with the hook wanting to be roughly 750mm above the bottom......sinker depends on run ofcourse, we will use up to 1lb snapper leads........I like fresh fish fillet something like Blue salmon is good if you can get it but good squid will do.....shark flesh works well also.

I use a 70-80 lb Scnieder leader and let them have a chew for a bit.....they have a very distinctive bite......more like a knocking coming through the line and the bight seems very subtle for a fish of it's size.

Ledge's and wrecks seem best up here but I have definatly found them on knobbly hard bottom when looking for Goldies......Also caught my fair share when trolling for Barra on hard bodies......

Good luck getting your first Jewie........I still remember mine even though it's been just over 20 years now.

    Re: Black Jew advice

    hey nipsta,

my family has fished stanage a fair bit.

we always fish at slack water in the 40m holes or in an area about 18m deep with a gravely bottom. its not far from the ramp.

always fish with squid, paternosta rigs and 6/0 Kendal kirbys. we have caught black jew, fingermark, blueys, estuary cod and sharks. lots of sharks!

only ever use enough lead to hold the bottom.

if we get live bait in the cast nets we generally do a lot better with them than the squid.

    watch the tides!

    hope this helps

    cheers, joe
