90 etec trim tilt

Hi Guys - Had to replace my trim motor but after a few problems bleeding the pump we finally got the tilt arm to go up and down. When I connected it all up it won't hold the motor up or tilt it back up. Uncoupled the motor and the unit will push up my weight pushing down but once tilt motor stops it won't hold weight.

Am I doing something wrong? To initially bleed it - while I had the tilt motor off I manually pulled plunger up and down and added oil. Plunger got extremely hard to lift as eventually no air was released into reservoir. A test run off the outboard had it working so I fitted it but now it won't lift the ETEC or stay up.

Any ideas?? Reservoir was full so not sure I can get anymore in.

Yep - tight as and no oil leaking anywhere visible.

Did you remove the actual hydraulic pump unit (located under the trim motor) ?/

To be honest don't think too many people repair the hydraulic side of trim units these days, very fidly . There are several miniature ball bearings (check valves) which any will let the engine fall if missing. Sorry to say but you may end up replacing the whole unit

Gary - I originally had a leak around the stem that goes up and down. We pulled the whole unit out but only replaced the two seals. I live remote so this took awhile as the unit had fused to the engine and we took our time freeing it. After replacing the seals the motor decided that it wouldn't work so the only time I opened that side of the unit was to replace the motor. The underneath part was never touched.

OK, the proper bleeding routine is to lift the engine to the highest point , open the reservoir and fill it as much as possible. Then replace the fill bung Lower the engine to lowest point and wait 5 mins. raise the engine to the very top and check the oil level... do this 3 times and it should have bled

they are a self bleeding system .
