First Bream Trip of the Year

    Hi all,

It was time to make the first bream trip so off I went on Saturday night to one of the more consistent locations (Point Halloran) that I fish. It doesn’t produce big bags of fish, but you can usually get a feed, and at times some really horse fish.

Those that have fished for bream with me, know that I like to bring a smorgasbord of baits. It was no different this time, and I went equipped with tailor fillet, mullet fillet, garfish and yabbies. I also had some horse mackerel that I found in the back of the freezer. I suspect it had remained hidden during the great freezer defrosting that occurred as a result of the ex-Oswald induced power failure. This bio-hazardous bait did not make it into the water and stayed safely in its vacuum pack.

It was a very big tide on Saturday night, so even across the flats there was enough current to make my 000 and 00 sinkers float so I went up to a 1 ball. There was a mile of small fish early that were thrown back, but around the top of the tide, the better fish showed up, with a couple around the 33cm. The best bait was tailor fillets with the yabbies pretty hopeless this time as a result of the small fish.

The fish had good condition on them and have fattened up nicely. You should be able to catch bream across the flats at most locations on the western shoreline of Moreton Bay over the next month.

My family was happy with the feed of bream last night and they are on the menu again tonight.

    Daryl
