Just had a bit of a crack fishing offshore bundy on the weekend. Got a good yellowfin and dropped a cracker spanish mackeral trolling around the fifteen mile reef which was great but struggled heaps to get any sort of reefy to look at my bait. What techniques/tips do people have for blokes starting out when it comes to fishing offshore. Rigs/anchoring or drifting/ bait/ Plastics. Just keen to know what works for different blokes so i can have a bit of a crack. Cheers. Josh
Josh, do a search on Ausfish for reports from Marvin (Kev) or Setthehook (Rob). These guys regularly fish off Bundy with great results.

Look at joining Bundy Sprortfishing club,great bunch of people,family and kids friendly.I was a member when I lived in Bundy,quiet often had weekends away fishing.

Hi Josh.
I just started offshore fishing off Moreton and Goldie about 3 years ago.
It was a bit daunting at first. Big ocean, where and how to fish???
I found I learnt the most about where to fish, techniques that work best, and what species to target and when/how by going on a couple of good charter trips.
Being shown how to do it and catching the fish is much easier than reading about it and trying on your own.
Try and stick to smaller owner operator charters rather than big comercial companies as the smaller bloke has his reputation on the line and wants you to catch fish unlike the big companies that just want your money. ( This is evident on the Gold Coast where a boat of 12 can go out and no one catches a legal fish, thats if they catch a fish at all.)
It does cost money to go on a charter but what they can teach you in a day would take you months on your own and thats a lot of time on the water and fuel wasted.
Good luck, once you get the hang of it you'll never want to fish inshore again.
It may sound a bit strange Josh but the best thing you can do to improve your offshore fishing is to stop spending money on rods, reels and all that other gear and save your money and buy yourself the best sounder you can afford.
Stretch your budget to buy the best colour sounder you can afford with the highest vertical pixel count you can. If you forgo buying a few rod and reel set ups and save to buy a good sounder it's the best thing you can do to improve your offshore fishing bar none.
If you can't locate the fish then there is little point in having all the flash gear, best techniques, plastics, bait and rigs.........
Best sounder you can afford.............I don't think there will be one successful offshore fisherman here that will tell you otherwise.

Some great advice here guys, it is good to see that there still are people ready to share knowledge with new fisher people's and not just say.....check out previous posts....it is nice to see actual responders to questions, otherwise everything has probably been covered somewhere before, so no real need for a forum!
I particularly like the advice about the charter operator in your own area...I am going to do that.....would Smithy be the best choice on the sunny coast?

Judging by his reports and good reputation I would say Smithy would be the only one to go to!
I have never heard a bad word about Smithys charters. As for fishing the area off Bundy do as the others have said and look up fellow members in the area. See if you can tag along on a trip or meet up for a bit of a chin wag. Once you get to know a few fishos in the area you will get the heads up on whats biting at the time. Tinshack and Marvin would be my starting point. Both great guys who know how to fish the area. Send them each a PM and see how you go
