just took the plunge and bought myself a nice boat 6.4mt trailcraft sportscab and after doing some work to it mainly electrical, keen to get it out on the water asap. wondering if anyone would be kind enough to hook me up with some marks, ive only gotten the 2 barge marks off my mate at corio bay which seem to be ok but want to explore some more country, ive got a 250lt tank to go of
hey mate,
while you're waiting for possible marks, if you get a local chart of the area and head to countour marks that have a good round curve or teardrop shape, the wilder the better, in these areas is usually some hard bottom (hence the current, wave action etc carves out the softer sand and leaves the rock/coral/bommies that are hard structure and form funny contour lines on the chart). That's a good spot to start mate, grab a couple trolling lures and throw them out then either work a grid style trolling system, or radiate out from a given point slowly increasing your circles, you'll have a number of marks in no time, well at least after a couple of trips.
A few work colleagues fish wide of Yeppoon in a 6.3m Cat with twin 250s. They get good catches of both Small and Large Mouth Nannygai, they also bring home Red Emperor, Hussar, Parrot, Jobfish. From our conversations they say that distance covered is the key to success. They don't fish often, but when the weather is right they do overnight 200-300km round trips. In their words "The further out you go the bigger the catch".

Have you got the basic spots like Pinnacles, Hannas Rock etc? If not, I can give you these.
I would recommend doing a run up North and fish Findlays, your wreck mark, pinnacles and flat. Start doing trips like this and then work on building on your marks.
Don't take this the wrong way, it isn’t directed at you. The biggest error I see young boaters make (including myself) is the need for marks. There is a mindset that you need a mark, you drive to the mark and you fish the mark.
You will learn a lot more and find better fishing spots by finding your own ground. Get to know your sounder really well, start looking around contours (like Nicko said). Set your sounder up so it reads at speed and watch it while you’re travelling. You will become a much better fisherman by learning to find bottom and fish, knowing tides and moon phases. It takes a lot of patience and time.
You dont need to go a long way to catch fish; but if you want to catch a LOT of Emperor/nanny's it sure helps.
spider pig cheers
nahh haven't got pinnacles or hannahs rock anything like that, have fished flat and pererated my gps has a upgraded card in it so it helps a lot with all the islands, green zones etc and that but dosent show you where the rocks are, I guess im chasing everything mackerels and bottom fish but yeah I can see where your coming from about just having specific marks and just using them, im new at this so I just want to know where the spots are so then I can adventure around and find better ground in that area kind of thing,
pinnacles is that just an area of decent bottom or has it got a structure like a big rock or island out of the water?
front flip, i got a couple pages of marks given to me from few different people, i am new here too and dont mind sharing as long as i get feed back hahahaha so i can visit, pm me personal email and i will email them to you.
