    Are you planning on using any special type of batteries Redhunter, or just the plain lead acid marinised type? Any special precautions for this location?

    You would also need some seriously sized battery cables to minimise voltage drop - long way back to the donks!.

    Maybe you have a game plan already, just curious. Don't think I would like them up there, too risky!

    I am with Brendon.

    My 6.2 travels much better in a following sea with all weight at the back.

    Fuel 180 ltrs mid ship, but motor, twin batteries and all sinkers ( about 20 kgs ) at the transom, no problems

    Gofish, can't really see what all the fuss is about, most twin battery set ups are in them little black boxes or tucked away down the back in closed compartments, so I don't see much difference having them enclosed under the bunks. But in the future may look at some sealed batteries. As for the cables, will be using the same thickness as my stress free anchor winch has and there has been no probs there. Marine batteries can take a pounding.

    Luckyphill, the 175 weights 220kg and the twin 90s weigh 316kg, so I need to pull some weight off the back to balance the boat. As for 180L, going to need a lot more fuel than that to fish DI lol.

    Lol. Like that one Casey, have to rip that into him.
    We spent about 20hrs on the water and searched more than we fished and I found it hard to get used to skippering the big cat. But what impressed me more than the big cat was not once did the boys complain when I searched and also Justin's attitude; he really is keen to push on, I don't think it will be long before he starts smashing reds left right and centre.

    Not making a fuss RH, just raising a concern I have and asking the question.

    There can be a huge difference in the g-forces/shock and relative movement experienced by items down the back of a boat compared to the same item up the front.

    Sure, marine lead-acid batteries are built a bit 'heavier-duty' than typical automotive batteries, but I wouldn't say they 'can take a pounding'.

    You might be able to securely fix the plastic boxes, and secure the batteries inside the boxes (so they don't move around), however if the liquid (acid) escapes, those plastic boxes will not hold the liquid/acid captive in any rough seas.

    The lids have big gaps which are meant to vent Hydrogen produced when there is any charge going in to the battery (at least for the types that release H2). Salt water is sodium chloride (NaCl), and there will always be traces in the bilge/hard to get at places. I'm no chemist but I also see a potential for a weak acidic vapour to form in the right conditions when your batteries are charging (H + Cl = HCl, or hydrochloric acid). An acidic vapour in a enclosed/confined aluminium space may spell long term corrosion trouble, not to mention any concentration of H2 gas if it can not be vented in that area.

    Personally, I would never install lead-acid batteries up under the bunks of an offshore boat - but it's not my boat, it's yours! You obviously do a lot of offshore work (and thru bars too), and you are obviously spending a lot of money on the mods & new motors etc, so it makes sense to check it out properly - I think anyway.

    If they have to be there, then my advice would be to talk to a few battery experts (a few - to check that they all have the same recommendations). I would guess they may recommend a GEL battery, however, that is 'a guess'. I am not a battery expert.

    if you do locate the batteries up the front just ensure that you install breathers to the battery compartment (like a surveyed vessel has with its radio/house battery)
