Hi guys, I'm still new to these Brisbane waters,
I went out last weekend for a night time fish at the port of Brisbane. where the lock rock wall is, I fished just out off that in my boat, took a mate for the laughs,
we started at 5pm, sat there till 2am. using bonito and slimy all night. caught 4 1m shovel nose sharks, 9 catfish, 2 sting rays, 4 eels, and a hand full of Muddy's.
it was not to the lack of trying multiple different approaches to catching good fish, but there was not a single fish caught.
My guess is I need Livies. I just bought a 12ft cast net to attack this problem, is there any ideas where to catch a good amount of livies , what are yakkas .
I'm guessing to target jew's and threadfin I need either live mullet at least, just asking if any veteran Brisbane river to jumpin bar fishers are out there to help with this.
Dont know where you are from mate but I get a fair few live mullet, herring etc around the back of redland bay boat ramp or most ramps in the redlands for that matter. Cant really comment on river fishing as I have never done it. yet. But down toward the pin you will get livies up in little feeder drains and creeks in the islands as well as around the beach areas on the western side of south straddy. As far as fishing goes down there Im not much good to you either. I mainly fish offshore but I do believe they pull jew. tailor etc around the pin bar mainly on the northern side around the swan bay area. Watch the green zone in swan bay though. Oh and Yakkas are yellowtail. If you put the area you live in on your signature people may be able to help you who are in that area. Good luck
Well presented Slimey Mackerel or Bonito is pretty nice bait and gets results, so don't be fooled.
Though yeah Herring, live prawns live mullet live yakkas, live squid, live pike, are all good baits.
I would just try cast netting anywhere till you get the hang of it and you find a spot, it usually only takes one or two casts to realise there is nothing around, then move on.
They use to cast-net a bit round the poo chute and boggy creek, though I am not up on it.
The poo chute normally holds herring and mullet, some of those real big mullet at times as well. One good cast there when the herring are around will sort out the livebait problem. Most areas near boat ramps will have mullet if you have a few throws before you leave.
Try around the beacons in the shipping channel with bait jigs, these can occasionaly hold yakka's.
Caught just as much with a well presented dead bait as live
after a few long nights on the Brisbane river, caught my first Queensland Jew. 82cm. in middle of the channel in the river. about 500 m from the mouth of a stinking pilchard. I've still yet to catch any live bait,
I need to find this "poo chute" you mentioned. I've thrown the cast net out a few times on the shallows, nothing yet.
Boldric, I have extensive experience in the use of a cast net, as does anyone who has fished the mary. let me know when a night or day suits and I can meet you at the pinkenba ramp and show you the ropes. no doubt that livies are the go with threadies but you will still get catfish, sharks, rays etc. combination of both can be good. best for threadies in my experience are prawns, mullet and herring.
