Curtin 20/04

Headed out to Curtin today for the first time. Outboard has just been repaired so was a good excuse to head out for a fish.

Left Scarborough at 4:00AM, headed over to some beacons close to Moreton and loaded up on livies. First tried to drift some small reef I found but the fish I sounded did not want to bite. Arrived at Curtin by sun up.

I sounded around for a bit and found some isolated rock on the outskirts of Curtin on the Northern end. My first few livies were taken by hawks. These things just kept going at my balloons. I changed color and it seemed to work but after an hour they took it again. Finally I figured the issue was I pinned them through the back and not the lips and I think they died.



Livies did not see any action, however bottom bouncing did. I ended up with, 50cm Grey Morwong, 40cm Golden Trevally, 63cm Spotted Mack, 60cm King fish. The best thing is, this is my first time catching each of these species, so it was a real good day with real good conditions.

That was the only pic I got before the camera died. This won't happen again!

Something interesting I did witness there was the actions of a dive boat. There were about 5 or 6 boats anchored up on the reef with another boat doing drifts between us. At one point a dive boat pulled up near a cat(within 10 meters) that was anchored and put his dive flag up. No one moved and there were no war of words. Both just did their "thing".

After awhile the dive boat started to move in front of our boats with the snorkelers following the boat north a bit. I have always though boats need to be at least 30 meters away from a dive boat. Luckily he did not come within 30 meters of myself, but these snorkelers swam by a boat within 2 meters of it.

What are the correct procedures for dealing with a dive boat when this occurs, considering all boats were anchored up and drifting first.

Hi Julian, we drifted through that area a few times mid morning just before the dive boat appeared, we saw the boat appear as we were getting ready to leave and thought that's the end of that.

Talking to one bloke in a tinny within earshot reckons he boated a Spaniard on a livey - stranger things have happened I suppose but we didn't pull anything off there with fresh herring and plastics, next time .

Nice day for boating but crap barometer.

That is a very common occurrence at Curtain and no one seems to worry too much about the law n regards to distance from dive boats especially the dive boats themselves. Usually as soon as they hit the water the fish go off the bite.

A mate of mine thought he had hooked a nice big cobia there one day but after reathing it up to the surface it turned out to be a very angry diver with an 8/0 hook through the back of his wet suit.

They quite often purge themselves nearing the surface so best to cut the line.
