This story is too good not to share ...
My old man has been visiting from South Africa. We spent a week fishing the seaway in the tinnie, and landbased off southern GC beaches. Had good success with tailor, schooljew, mac tuna and squire. Best catch was dad landing a 140cm (13kg) shovelnose off the beach, that pulled him around for 20 minutes or so.
Dad left for Perth last week to see my sister & bro-in-law. After a boring week of shopping, touring etc dad was itching for a fish, and managed to find a few Perth-fishos from sister's church who would take him for a surf session off the local rocks.
So, this morning he & bro-in-law got down to the beach at 5:30am and were greeted by a crew of weekend warriiors with mulies (pilchards), gang-hooks and KMart beach combos .... he didn't hold much hope for a good session, and the sea was flat as a lake with clear water and no action.
After 90 minutes or so they had landed a few choppers, and a school-Jew (50cm limit in WA, so perfect for brekki). Dad went to fillet the fish before leaving for brekki, and as they were packing to leave a bloke called Johnny handed dad a rod and said, "C'mon, last cast before you go"
Dad flung the mulie in and was having a yarn about the iFish show where Paul landed a sailfish on a cheap kids combo .... then he felt the bait picked up, and something big swam away, leaving dad's rod buckling and the cheap Jarvis Walker screaming for all it was worth - 20lb mono peeling off at a rapid rate of knots!
After a 30minute fight he brought this 23kg AJ/Sambo to the beach and was fortunate to gaff it in the calm of a gutter (no swell at all)
A once-in-a-lifetime catch in the most unexpected circumstances !!!! Needless to say my brother in law is about to convert from bodyboarding to FISHING :-)
So now I get it. Your family specializes in catching giant fish on bodgie brothers combo's like the 2500 sienna you used the other week to score your pb spaniard and tuna etc..
Your Dad just wanted to top your story and so ...like a good Dad....he did!!
