Am looking at upgrading from current In-hull transducer to either thru-hull or transom mount transducer. I can only get a 600watt based on my current DSM30 Raymarine Sounder unit. Any thoughts and comments would be much appreciated. Which one will read better between 20-30knots?
Why aren't you happy with the in hull mate??
Doesn't give a reading when travelling above 15knots and also when zoomed in on bottom there's lots of interference. I just figured that a thru-hull would give a much clearer reading if it doesn't have to penetrate fibreglass???
I would check the installation of your current transducer first. I have an in hull (shhot through hull) Airmar and it works flawlessly up to 5800rpm (70km/h). Where is yours mounted exactly, what sort of boat (I assume glass)?

I have the same problem. I drop out at about 20knots & it drives me mad! My marine mechanic can't understand why it wasn't done as a through hull install. He reckons I'd read to 35knots. I need to talk further to him about maybe doing an alteration.

Goldfinch I went from a transom mount 600w to a through hull 1Kw and It is like comparing a cartoon to real life image. Also it reads to WOT at 35knt without loss of picture and no interference.Mine is a DSM 250 but either way you should achieve the same result. Jim

Angry, It's an Edgewater 19ft glass centre console. The current In-hull transducer is mounted in the transom bilge area. It's in a good spot but it's not thru-hull. Unfortunately with my current Sounder I can only use a 600watt transducer. If I want to upgrade to a 1kw I would need to upgrade the sounder module as well as buy a 1kw transducer. I usually only fish up to 80m depth so will a 600watt transducer installed thru-hull give me a much better result that the current 600watt In-hull? Thanks for your reply.

I use a 600w airmar shoot through transducer with my koden which is mounted in my bilge area near the transom and it works great at speed. Just as long as your tranducer is shooting through straight glass with no flotation material surely you should be able to get a good enough reading. All the best with it mate.
Who installed your in hull transducer? What brand is the transducer? Both Webby nq and I have Airmar transducers in our boats, both glass, and both installed in the bilge area with no issues at speed. To me it seems something is not right with your installation.
Its a Raymarine P-79 transducer. I had a good look at the installation in the bilge area and it looks well installed. Perfectly flat and well sealed 360%. I get a great reading in the river at 30knots but any kind of offshore lump and its terrible over 15knots. It's also very cluttered when I zoom in on the bottom. The P-79 is a cheap transducer. I can only assume spending 3 times the money on a thru-hull tranny should improve the signal.
