looking for advise on hooking up batterys.

hi,
i am going to run a NOT permanently mounted minnkota and 100 AH agm deep cycle on my seajay with 60 yam 4st.so im probably hooking the sounder/bilge/gunnel lighting to the start battery, but can i hook up the deep cycle to charge on the go? eg- VSR,dual batt switch or mounted dc to dc charger? (cost probably rules out the dc to dc)

with the vsr and a half flat deep cycle, will it work? because i imagine the main batt reaching charge then vsr switching over and the half flat deep cycle draining the other batt very quickly and the vsr switching back again and the cycle repeats itself over and over in quick succession? = not the ideal solution. or is my understanding of the vsr wrong??

most times i dont mind taking out the charger and extension cord after a trip but im thinking more for the long weekends away where the trolling and running around in between casting sessions can top up the minn kota batt.

keeping mind the yam only has a 17 amp alternator which wont do much therefore making this thread useless LOL.

interested in your thoughts on the matter.

EDIT: the reason i say not permanently mounted is because of taking the minn kota and DC out for offshore trips and the like so the electronics cant be hooked up to it.

The VSR module keeps the batteries isolated, it switches to the secondary, when the primary battery hits 13.8v and switches back when the primary battery is 12.4 volts. So if your running your engine for a period it does not just switch in and out, it will charge both batteries, (one after the other).

Yep understood, but would a heavily discharged second battery drag the other one down quick smart maybe to the 12.4 cutoff point? therefore disengaging again?

No, thats the point of having the VSR and separate battery switches - the 2 batteries are isolated from each other while being charged and one can never bring the other down.

You understand how VSR's work and you are almost right. A half flat battery probably not cycle the VSR but a flat one would. Your fully charged battery would be 12.7V and the half charged one would be 12.2v so just do a rough calculation 12.7-12.2 + 12.2 should give you 12.45 which would be above the drop out voltage and they would both charge but do that with a flat battery of 11.9 and the VSR would be continually switching back and forth.
One of the things you have to remember is VSR's charge the second battery very slowly not anywhere near the rate of the primary battery as the second battery is now in parallel
