    second hand motors

Looking at a second hand motor, was wanting some opinions on how many hours is to many on a motor, how many hours should we be looking to get out of them. Got a mate who claims pros want over 6000 before they change over

    Re: second hand motors

What sort? 2 stroke or 4 stroke? What sort of use, rec or commercial. Has it been serviced properly? From what I have been able to find out there is no definitive answer. It comes down to the individual motor. A rec motor that only has 80hrs on it may sound good but if that motor is 10yrs old it may be a liability due to lack of use.

Yeah I'd buy a high hours over a short time motor over a low hours over a long time.

All I can remember growing up is my old man buying a succession of second hand motors over the years and rowing home!

Depends of how its been treated I guess. My '82 Suzuki 85 appeared to have not been used in goodness knows how long, but a clean of the carbies and away she went.

Unless you strip it down before you buy a second hand motor there will always be a element of luck as to weather its a good un or not.

If I was ever to buy a second motor I would only ever buy from inland.
Look on the net or ring the major dealers in some of the bigger inland towns and cities and see what they have for sale.
Very rarely does a motor from the freshwater have corrosion and electrical issues like a motor from the salt and the extra bit in freight costs is money very well spent.
