Thread: Buying fish

    Buying fish

I love eating fish and so does my daughter (I have her every second weekend).

I normally go fishing twice a week but never catch anything legal size, there are not many fish here, as its already fished out.

So I buy a lot of fish, because I think fish is an important part of a growing kids diet.

So my question is which fish is best to buy when looking at sustainability?

Hoki fillets at $11.00 a kilo
    Bassa at $9.00 per kilo
Nile perch at $10.00 per kilo.

I've bough all of them and they all taste fine. But when I buy these fish, which is less likely to destroy the fishery they come from? I don't want to turn some foreign coastline into another fishless Yeppoon.

The only one of those three that doesn't affect the fishery would be basa being farmed from vietnam but what it does to the water might be a different story how they farm them is atrocious.
Nile perch wild fish are surposed to be getting fished out and could be a concern, but hoki which gets caught over in Tasmania and new Zealand doesn't affect the rec anglers being caught in deep cold water but they catch them with massive nets which usually puts a dint in the fishery one way or another.
If I was feeding kids out of those three I'd choose hoki for safety reasons because of concerns over pollution and problems with waterways with the other two not to mention other stuff they feed bassa, the best option for sustainability would be sea mullet especially coming into mullet season yet that won't help you line fishing because they aren't the easiest to catch other than a net.

I wouldn't feed my kids any of that fish at all. The Local Co Ops have plenty local fish : Mackeral Sweetlip Coral Trout Red Throat Barra Rosy Hussar Threadfin Bream whiting
We Manage a feed from the overfish area's here and the beaches on the coast still hold a lot of whiting and large bream

There is a fine line between fishing and just standing on the shore like an idiot

I wonder how much deeper the ocean would be without sponges

Up here we Use Hussar as baits for real RED FISHS (SHSIIFDER)

I just can't catch any though. You must be one of those fishermen that can catch a fish in a bathtub. Sadly buying is my only only option these days, unless I do a trip to Brisbane or NSW where there are heaps of fish around . But I have never nor will ever a freezer filler.

The local co-op is just too expensive, they have local fish ( ? ) but it starts @ $25 per kilo. And last time I went there what I bought was off almost green.

Mate i hope you know what Bassa actually is, and where it comes from. It's actually Catfish which they farm, in the Filthy Fishing Farms of Asia. I know Fish are quite expensive to buy from shops, but hey support a local Mate. Oh i still still can't understand why you can't catch a feed from your location.God Damm Imports. Cheers Manta Man

i wouldnt feed my kids nile perch or bassa if it was the last thing on earth left.. but thats me.. My suggestion would be to invest in a charter or a guide to take you fishing.. There is fish everywhere its just a matter of figuring it out.

    Re: Buying fish

Sorry clicked the wrong button me thinks. I've looked at doing a day with Jonny Mitchell (bassed in Gladstone) around the Port Alma area to learn how to find these elusive fish in this area. But at $800 for the day. Seems a lot of $.

With charters, the overall cost usually buys the boat for the day. So for $800, he'd probably take at least 2 if not three anglers. Put the word out, split the cost a few ways and it might make it a bit more affordable.

    Re: Buying fish

When i first moved to the coast i couldn't catch much at all down here and ended up fishing with a few guys off this site who are still very good friends to this day.. Im not saying that every time i go out i catch tons but i can certainly catch enough to not go near the fish shops for a feed if i want one... thats also another option.
It was tough at first because where i used to live (south coast NSW) i never had a drama getting a feed... sounds like you kinda have the same drama
    Good luck Mate.
