Shady Camp, NT - 1m+ Barra/Thready Round 1 TEBS (+help me win a pair of spotters!)

    Hey guys,
had round 1 of the top end barra series at Shady Camp on the weekend just gone.
Fishing was pretty slow for the barra but a few quality fish caught - this was always going to be the way with the crap wet season we have had.
Threadies are out there in their thousands though!
I lucked out on the barra front but put my wife onto her second metery so she's happy.
Now first up please click on this link of the wifeys metery and 'like' the photo so I can win myself a pair of spotters!!!

Check out the sidescan image - place was loaded with big fish, each 'grain of rice' on the side image was either a big thready or massive golden catfish (with the very odd barra mixed in)
You might also note how many trolls we did over the same line - and that was only day 1!

    then the storms came.....

Don't feel bad about the fishing been fishing jabiru the last 2 weeks for nothing. The east is barely flowing and can still get to cahills in a Camry. Water at the peak was 400mm at magella crossing and 1.7 at cahills. Ran a tinny up the east about 4 weeks ago and got nothing.

Love the report SF. When I see those pic's it make me realize how much I enjoy the place. Those threadies are a lot of fun and great to eat. Not a bad barra either . Looks like I won't get there this season. Dan hasn't been out yet!

Dan probably hasn't been out cause he knows its fruitless. Better off hitting up the reefies at the moment. Apparently a big wet weekend due but that may not be enough to push the barra out of the billabongs. Was looking at planning a trip up here with a couple of blokes for April/may but not looking good for this year.

    Thanks guys!

The main problem with this wet is we didn’t get enough early rain I reckon – the bait hasn’t had a chance to breed in a lot of the systems so we’re now relying on the emptying of LAST year’s bait in the billabongs…
Should be a good season for the bigger fish though that’s for sure.

what a difference a week can make in the top end - complaining about not enough rain and now the Mary River has risen from 1m (when i did this post) to over 8meters now. If anyone is heading down to shady camp or has a trip planned up here all this water will be down the mouth in about a week or so's time.
