Help new garmin 750s not getting a GPS fix

Installed my new 750s today, turned it on and it won't get a GPS fix and it comes up with america showing on the map. I have a fibreglass hardtop on the boat but I doubt that would stop it from getting any signal. I held it out in the open but made no difference. No loudspeaker in the sky either.

Any help would be much appreciated.

    Cheers, Mitch

Buy it locally? If so, take it back.

All good it's working now. I think the overhead power line to our house might have had something to do with. The boat was right under it. I moved the boat forward a metre and its working now.

You might like to try turning it on and leaving it on for some time.

Good to hear. I reckon they are a good gadget for the money. Am about to purchase a 1kw transducer. The one that came out of the box performs well, but I want more now I have worked out how to drive it. The Garmin rep fitted ours while we were at the dealers waiting to pick up the boat. He recommended the NMEA GPS antenna if using it for instruments, sounder and plotter. Offloads some processor workload was the reason, so if you are fitting NMEA backbone may be worth considering if it is your only screen. Good luck with it.

Cheers thy. Sure does look like a good unit. Had a quick play with it. The standard map looks pretty good too.

That's interesting Thy, fitted the 750s and nmea 2000 network to my new tinnie recently and advised not to install the external GPS antenna even though it was supplied with the engine instruments and it will work fine on the built in one.
The unit seems to work fine although does seem to take longer than I would have thought to update the map at times. Any Garmin gurus who know for sure what is better?

Have not yet decided, still weighing up the pros and cons. Leaning towards the 270 for the wider 200hz beam. We generally fish for pelagics, either drifting for kings or trolling for tuna, so the wide beam 200 means we may see bait that we are currently missing when out wide. Only disadvantage I can see is where you get to fish in calm waters with minimal current where you need to pinpoint the location of fish, not something we get to do really.
