Pumicestone Passage water quality

G'day lads,

Was thinking about an early fish tomorrow up in the passage. Haven't been there since the rain and was wondering what the water quality was like?? Anyone been on it in the last few days?

Yes, I was up there on Friday. The water had a reasonable amount of salt in it at dead low tide and plenty at the high. There was no debris in the water at all that I saw and the water wasn't too discoloured, although a bit more than usual. There was a fair bit of weed about the size of grass clippings collected on the crab pots and was a bit of a nuisance to clean off because it was so small. I got 31 sandcrabs and 1 mudcrab in my pots over about 5 hours of which 2 sandcrabs were legal. There were a few bream and whiting around (I was after whiting) but did not get a single legal fish.

Great info, Freeeedom. Just wondering, why do you think the fresh hasn't affected that area as much? Do you think it's still coming to that particular section, or are some areas flushed/unaffected more than others? I know some of the creeks northside Bris atm are rats%it! Thanks for the insight.

I think that it's probably due to the fact that the catchment that drains into the passage is fairly small with only a few relatively small creeks feeding it (Ningi, Coochin, Glasshouse, Bells) rather than a major river. Also it's not far around the bottom of bribie to the open sea and a rising tide pushing into the bay will bring the salt back into the passage well before it reaches the Caboolture, Pine and Brisbane rivers.
