Myself and a few mates of mine are thinking of doing a houseboat trip out of Tin Can Bay and up behind Fraser. What time of the year do people think would be the best fishing. Not entirely sure what we would be targeting. We normally do winter down the Pin. We also enjoy setting a few pots and understand that the summer months are better for this, but we still normally bag a few muddies down the Pin in winter.

The other option we tried was hiring a sailing cat from Fraser Escape at hervey bay which was about the same cost but a lot more fun and very comfortable. Can go up to Rooneys point (we got as far as Wathumba). Took a couple of rod holders and attached them to the rails and trolled around under sail. Had a ball. Spainiards to 25kg, spotties, tunas. It blew 20-25 knots from the SE for the week but was great sailing in the lee of the island and the cat was stable when we got out in the rough stuff. Seasick-prone mate didn't hurl all week and anchoring in the shallows in the lee of the island was very pleasant at night. Planning to do it again.
do you have sailing experience? I don't think any in our party will have.
They also have motor cruisers (flybridge cats) for hire as well. The yachts are less expensive tho - but they do have motors as well so you could have a go at sailing or just use the motors and forget about the big stick thingy!Originally Posted by sandbankmagnet

not much, but you don't need much. As long as you aren't stupid they are pretty simple. The bloke that runs it gives you a pretty good run down.

Getting back on subject, does anyone have any thoughts about the best time of year to fish the Straits?
might be less wind in the winter months. yes, crabs are better in summer for sure as are jack etc but you will catch fish at whatever time you go there. just choose a time and then sort out what fish you are going to target. my pick would be feb march, crabs and jack still around also whiting flatties bream sandies cod moses plus trumpies and pelagics toa degree. should not be super hot.

Mate you are limited on how far you can travel on a houseboat I would check this?
As for a good time to cruise in a houseboat would be March to April

We've done that trip. Weather was a bit more sour than predicted and didn't quite get to experience the Fraser side of things. It was a while ago, but from what I remember the areas we ended up being limited to just got swarmed by locals in tinnies who also couldn't get in to better water. I imagine the whole thing would be nicer in fairer weather, but I recall with the price of engine hours to get to the decent spots we've since sort of lost interest in the area for houseboat hire.
Will watch your report with interest though, I don't like to make a judgement on a spot based on one trip but it's amazing how the cost of these trips up. Bored of the other systems now though.
Mate done the tincan bay house boat thing about a dozen times 8-10 nights , usually go in early august , good weather cool to sleep at night and bugs at a minimal , swimming not so good water is cooler , fishing is still very good , get a good feed everyday and still release extra`s , like to eat my fish fresh (tailor flattys whiting bream sole travelly makerall and more , can get crabs that time of year , , you can go all the way up to kingfisher resort or any of the heaps and heaps of anchorages along the length of the straits away from any crowds , plenty of places out of the wind as well . yep going again this year but at a different time , recommended holiday

Looks like we are going to head up on the July full moon around the 22nd. Hopefully some variety of fish around then. Will take our luck with the crabs.
Excellent work mate. If you're going for a number of days it's certainly worthwhile taking the boat up to Gary's Anchorage and fishing that area; north up to deep creek, hole in the wall, and south to Figtree and occasional litttle rubble patches off Poona etc. There are yabby banks and livies all through there so you should be right for bait. A coffee rock ledge runs just off Fraser and there are still some horse blueys in there, also lots of smaller snapper, grassies, moses etc. Worth dropping pots for sure. Good luck... best holidays I've ever had on a houseboat, just love it.
Should get a few big whiting at that time of year and there is still muddys around if they are on they are monsters
