Q; Rain in south east QLD will effect fishing in the bay how?

    Afternoon All,

A question for you who are more wise then I, how is all this rain and extra fresh water coming out of rivers/creeks going to effect the fishing in morton bay?

I'm still very raw at this fishing gig and any in site to help my chances much appreciated

    Thanks in advance

Will depend to some extent on how much rain we get. I see today that Campbell Newman has announced that water is going to be released from North Pine Dam and from Wivenhoe as a precautionary measure before the main rain influence gets here tomorrow. That means that the Brisbane and Pine rivers will get a good flushing out anyway. This will cause a lot of fish down from the upper reaches towards the river mouths, so the fishing for estuary species like bream, flathead and whiting should improve as soon as the main flood subsides. It should also cause the prawns and baifish to concentrate in the lower reaches which will also improve the estuary fishing and mudcrabs are also forced down the rivers by a big fresh. It takes a lot of freshwater to muddy up the water as far as Moreton so we will have to wait and see what happens, but the outflow from the Brisbane River should certainly reach Mud Island, so the fishing there could be affected for a while.

There has been considerable research done on the effect of floods on fishing.

Bill Sawynok from Capreef (Bill runs Queenslands fish tagging program amongst other things) has data that shows that fishing in the seasons following major flood events is significantly better, with more (up to 5 times) and larger fish being caught in the next season, and gradually tapering down over subsequent years. And the effect extends well offshore to the reefs, not just near shore.

Have a look at this report and you will be amazed at the results Bill and the researchers found.

A few locals at Redcliffe were praying for rain to bring on the crabs. (They got their wish!!)

    Too true Moonlighter.

I have been charting inshore commercial catch data and correlating against rainfall for fishery grids from Sandy Cape to Noosa Heads and rainfall has an obvious and enormous influence on yields. Yields in years of high rainfall (depending on when it falls) and for 2 to 3 years following are consistently higher than average. However, for these grids (W32, W34, W35), the trend is quite the opposite for the first time on record for the years 2010, 2011 & 2012 when yields have fallen and drastically for some species (tailor) at a time when they should be increasing.

Effectively, this means that when the next drought occurs, yields in this region, and I suspect others, can be expected to fall from already low levels.

FQ should recognise this as they make mention of the correlation between rainfall and yields on their website and they're working with the same data that I am to assess sustainability. Perhaps they believe that there won't be any more droughts.

At a local shorterm level you should see a few things happen
    Mudcrabs will fire up
Sandcrabs will move to the eastern Bay and deeper water
Fish will move to the mouths of rivers and estuaries
Pelagics will hunt in the area close to the dirty water

Triple , every year that we get a massive amount of fresh pushing into the bay the spotties tend to steer away.

I agree. Big flows of dirty water tend to keep them wide. We have had two lean Spotty seasons and if this keeps up it will be another write off
