    best GPS/sounder combo unit

    HI all,

I know a number of people are against combo units but I'm fairly sold on an upgrade combo as I have the smart phone GPS for backup if it did die wile out at sea anyway and due to dash space etc I think it would suit me the best.

So the question is what is the best unit and for saltwater bottom bashing and blue water game fishing off cairns and is the extra $1000 odd worth it for the 1kw transducer?

I'm looking at the higher end of the price range..
Also does the transmon mount transducer work as well as the through hull ducer?

    cheers Dave

    G'day

Look at the MFD's (multi function displays)

Personally, have a look at the Simrad NSS series, neat, capable and can do a hell of a lot and do it well.

hi, 1200-2000.. always easy to convince me to go a little bit more..lol

When I say higher end of the price range I should of said higher end for the 10inch screen, as size is the major issue.

Have a look at the Garmin range. I find them user friendly. Have heard others say they are not the greatest sounder but their mapping is 2nd to none. I have gpsmap 4210. Opted for this one as it is not a touch screen and was priced below $2000. I do not have a sounder module connected to it.

I will admit I got it cheap my best mate is a marine electrician and he mostly deals with raymarine and lowrance... He. Has been very impressed with the Garmin gear and hounded me for months to spend the extra and get the 12 inch touch screen ... I'm stoked... I looked at the 1kw transducer but unless you are fishing the shelf in all sorts of weather you don't really need it ... Mine has been to 100 fathoms and works great!!! Have a look...

do you know what the parts in your setup are? in type of ducer and sounder box?

does a transome mount, in-hull, or through hull transducer make any difference?

    cheers Dave
