    Budget rod and reel.

    Hi guys,

As my other thread states which is a somewhat different matter, i am heading to south straddy tomorrow. I was considering on grabbing:

    2. http://www.bcf.com.au/online-store/p...39#Description

Just for shallow depths off the island. Do you think these two would go together well as a combo? The price is $229 but i will try knock it down to a round $200. Is their a better alternative to the gear i have listed? My budget is around $230ish.

    Cheers.

Are you plastic flicking or lure fishing or bait fishing?
The rod is well suited to bait and will be lousy for lures/plastics.
For lure work I would be getting a 2-4kg Trion rod, high modulus graphite and very nice to use. http://www.bcf.com.au/online-store/p...01#Description tell them they are on sale all the time out of Mo tackle for 99.95 and they should match it or beat it.
The Berkley Dropshots are very good rods too for about the same price. http://www.bcf.com.au/online-store/p...ue#Description

The rod needs to be fairly crisp with very little waggle when shaken for placcies.

the Trion is standard price $99 at anaconda
picked one up with a Okuma Sion reel very nice setup all for about $180 the reel was $200 down to $79
i now have 3 of these reel is different sizes the large one for about 18 months and have out it through hell including a trip to Darwin and can not fault it.

    Re: Budget rod and reel.

Well I'd like a rod that i can use live bait and plastics with as well as lures... The pflueger rod looks nice, would that be versatile? I'd assume it would...

Well i've made my decision on a reel and im going to stick with Sienna 2500. I think it would be a good first reel for what im doing. As i already have an expensive bluewater set i don't want to go overboard. Don't think i should go the 4000?

I just need a good rod to match that could be used as an all rounder, relatively cheap but reliable.

Stick with a 2500 sized reel and run 8lb to 12lb braid on it.

the version 2 sonic pro is 10 times better than the cardinal.
and for some reason alot cheaper on the website than instore. i think the website price is wrong. grab one from the website for that price
i know the v1 sonic pro is $60 and the v2 are i think around $80-$90

mate you can just about guarantee that mo tackle . com . au will have everything that bcf has and cheaper. Get on their site and get bcf to pricematch. I bought a 2-4kg trion from for $99, they had it advertised for $134.99. Also bought a 2500 symetre at the time for $119, Bcf price was $149. Saved over $60. I use them both for plastics and bait fishing
cant beat that gear for the price, i also have a berkley dropshot 2-4kg and i cant kill it
Dad reckons fishing is 10% brains and 95% muscle, the rest is just good luck.

The Gary Howard Envy rod range are pretty solid, I have been using my 2-5kg a lot lately and have been catching a few.
Load up very nicely like a high price rod.
They are about 160, if only they were a bit cheaper, you could still match it with an Daiwa aird or okuma and have a nice combo.

Tackleland at Sandgate are doing Diawa Aird rod and reel combo's the rod is a carbon Diawa Aird rod with a 2500 Diawa Aird spin reel which comes with a 3000 spool aswell so have can fish Briad on 1 spool for the plastic's and if you are fishing bait you can load the spare spool up with mono to fish your baits the combo is $175.00. I got a 2500 Aird spin reel for my Shimano Raider and it is a great little reel for the money to 9 ball bearing and 6.2:1 drag.
