Where to find the Spanish Macks off Sunny Coast

Hi all,

Each year I set myself a target species and this year it is a nice big spaniard.

I have never caught one of any size so am keen to get onto at least one this season.

I am confident i have the equipment sorted with a range of lures and stuff and have also been trialling trolling rigged garfish. Now to find where and when to catch them.

Can anyone please give me some pointers on where is a likely spot to encounter a nice spaniard preferably from the Pt Cartwright ramp. I don't mind heading to the Caloundra area although I have been told on many occasions that they will be around Murphy's etc... just looking for more info such as a bit more specific advice... do people troll around the edge of the reef or at a certain water depth line etc or is there just a certain area of water that is known to hold them... I am happy to put in the time to get one on board but basically I would like some info on where to be rather than simply driving all over the place aimlessly.

I've found it the same as most other forms of fishing mate. Find the bait(Tuna,longtom,flying fish) and fish near it or in it. Ben

as ben said, but spend some time at the blinker & the gneerings around sunrise that would be your best place to start.

I heard they like Hot Cross Buns, and tis the season for it.

Down a 8 pack ( you can get these from Woolies) for breckie and by time you get out there they will come back up over the side. The burley trail will bring them on the bite.

Oh... And you'll need a deckie to steer while you're on. I'm available to steer that Sig if you like.

this might help a bit mate. i try to find my own spots, look for small contours on the chart, or any structure you can find, wrecks etc and you'll find the macks, if you can't find any after 15mins of trolling on the sounder then head off to spot two, they're pretty obvious and show up well on any sounder. also rocks, bommies, reef pressure points etc are good and worth a look, one gar and one xrap 30 and you can't go too far wrong.
