Thread: If I took away all your flash fishing gear ?

If I took away all your flash fishing gear ?

If you had no flash gear, how do you think you would go fishing?

If you had no sounder, no gps, no lecky and used sub $50 lackluser combo, what would your catch rate be like ?

To strip you of all your wares and plonk you in your boat out in the Bribie Passage and say good luck, may the best fisher person win, how would you do.

Just thinking of a new concept in fishing comps, for fun and fundraising.

Sub $50 is fine, I buy just about all my gear second hand off kids selling their flash gear off cheap as their looking for the dollars to upgrade to the next flash youbewt model, so its rare anything I buy is over $50

    Hi
Reckon it would be ok if you took mine. I started fishing with a bamboo pole with 4 foot of line ,a hook and sinker on the end and always came home with a fish. For years I fished without a sounder etc and never had a rod over about 20 bucks or so and again always caught fish.
it didn't matter years ago if your rod and real cost ya 20 bucks as long as you come back with a fish. Nowadays if you don't own a stella or a big fancy boat with all the trimmings you don't have a chance in hell of catching anything.

Ahh the good old days when it was much easier to jump in the car and go with a rod in tow and a bucket of worms.

Well if you were to enter such comp then, we would impose a penalty where you could only use one of those cheap pink combo's with little pink tackle box featuring fairy princess and tadpole decals.

Actually, if you were supplied the above combo with your comp fees and this was all you were able to fish with... That would make it interesting.

When I was a lad, my mates and I used to have the occassional friday night comp. We would buy the cheapest combo we could find at Kmart and go to the pinkenba sewage outlet and try and catch stonka catties on them. Whoever got the most catties before someone broke a rod would be the winner!

Those little cheap bing bing rods caught some big fish! About on par with those nasty pink and blue ones they sell now for $15.

I fish the bribie passage and don't have a sounder, a gps or a lecky. Can I keep my cast net?

I dont think it would matter fishing the passage ...... but it wont be as much fun !

Plenty of times I've grabbed a kids outfit to go and fish at some creek or off a jetty ...... though you do find that the reels can take a bit of a beating when the salmon or kingies move in

Give a man a fish & he will eat for a day !
    Teach him how to fish
& he will sit in a boat - & drink beer all day!

I'd be happy with my Alvey 500 and Jarvis Walker black queen, size 8 hook, a float and a loaf of bread. My more expensive gear is nice to use and nice to catch fish on, but getting back to basics is awesome too.

Does this include collecting the bait to fish with?
I reckon I could do ok on the whiting and bream and flatties with minimalist gear.
50 feet of line on a small handcaster, 5 suitable hooks, a few sinkers that are light and a bucket.

12 inch ringcaster 50mtrs VB cord large barrel sinker and a spoon. = mackeral
8 inch ringcaster 40 lbs mono 5/0 or 6/0 live mullet = Flathead Jacks Trevelly maybe a jew
5 inch ringcaster (what Kmart puts on it) small sinker 1/0 hooks = whiting bream maybe a dart

Could i buy all 3 for $50 ....... maybe would need to find a friendly Kmart for the last 2 and a b..c..f or such for the 12 incher.

I still use a hand line every now and then out the reef if there are sharks or unstoppables about it is good to get back to your roots

Re: If I took away all your flash fishing gear ?

We were raised with the old wooden handlines and the old coke bottles. Large eels, perch, mullett in the fresh, large flathead, jewfish and tailor in the estuaries. Raised on catching our own bait and tea, but less fisherman and less pressure from other areas (Pollution, development and population). Sounds good, but just think of the logistics of policing the competition. It is hard enough to run competitions these days, all the red tape, Marine reserves, restriction. Wish you all the best with the idea, but think you will find it difficult if not just a restricted comp to mates or those you can regulate.

I do remember the days, but like my goodies in my boat, don't use them much, but like to have them available when necessary.

......... I wouldn't miss a thing 'cos I still use my (really) old Alvey sidecasts and solid fibreglass rods!

My only "flash" gear is a chart plotter that I rarely if ever turn on!

Ah, for the good old days eh?
