Headed to Bribie Island from Sydney

    Hey guys
Have been watching with great interest the hot black marlin bite going on off SEQ. My stepdad lives on Bribie Island so have decided to tow the new imported boat up on the 27th. Have gamefished all my life out of Port Stephens Sydney etc and was lucky to be involved in the last big black marlin bite off the Port 10 years ago...was amazing fun. Anyway going solo this time in the new CC which is fully setup. I haven't been out from Bribie before but have a great new GPS/Sounder and a few GPS marks... Just need some advice as best way to head out and live bait..... Looking forward to seeing some guys out their ... It's a Robalo cc..any advice much appreciated.. Up for a week then headed back to South West Rocks for a week.

From Bribie you have to head at a place called Combyuro Point on Moreton Island on your GPS. Coming through Comby on your way out to sea can be a bit like a bar crossing, especially in a run-out tide and big swell. You'll have to hang a couple of hundred metres off the island for the first bit and then if it is big pick your way out where it isn't breaking. You will also experience rough water in the bay where the sand banks are depending on the tide. You can try and dodge them on your GPS to try and keep in the deeper water. As you come around the bottom Bribie you can also come to grief there. You either need to follow the beacons or hug the island a hundred metres or so out right around Skirmish Pt then head across. Either way you are trying to dodge a big sand bank called "Gilligans Island" which breaks. Bribie Passage can stand up big too depending on the tide. The worst is a big run-out tide into a big SEer standing them up. They get very short and sharp. Be careful you don't spear your CC through them if you get conditions like that. It can fill you up pretty quick.

As Smithy alluded to, if you pass Gilligans Island and its easterly running bar on the northern side it is generally better than the southern side, the water is a little deeper. If you cross on the southern side of Gilligans be sure you are several hundred metres south of it as it is shallower and can stand up higher and for a greater distance, but generally still passable with care.
No matter where you are in Moreton Bay it can turn into a nasty bit of work when a squall comes through and a safe approach is needed. Combyouro Point on the north western point of Moreton island is where most people round the top of the island to head outside. It can be a really heavy washing machine at times or dead flat at others. Tide, winds and opposing currents can turn a flat run into a wild run within minutes some days and it can cover several miles wide and across. Outside of that the seas are generally normal suiting conditions and pretty easy to read.
Heading out from Bribie, be sure to register with the coastguard there.
    Jack.
